I’ve started thinking about the International Booker Prize as some of us do this time of year. @stujallen.bsky.social reached out today about getting our annual reading group back together. And I’m looking through a very good eligibility list. www.goodreads.com/list/show/22...

Most grateful for another snow day tomorrow. Although it may be more accurate to call it an ice day because that is what has really sunk us. Not the fluffy stuff. Starting New York Sketches by E. B. White. From the wonderful @mcnallyeditions.com. Not a single disappointment in that line.

Thank you, winter storm.

No school again tomorrow. So I’m gleefully starting a new book. A Truce That Is Not Peace by Miriam Toews.

That’s snow nearly covering a basement window. I’m not going anywhere. I do have a few books to read.

Now watching.

Through the mail slot today. So much to love. Especially excited about a US edition of White Nights. @catranslation.org @twolinespress.com @andotherstories.bsky.social

The extra day after a full weekend. Blueberry pancakes, pajamas all day, reading a book about the art of a favorite movie. I have much Wallace and Gromit love.

Prized possession.

Through the mail slot today. Death and the Gardener by Georgi Gospodinov; translated from the Bulgarian by Angela Rodel.

Two years ago. Still haven’t found one that makes my picky self happy.

Started a funeral for my Twitter account. Not active there for some time, but I have been checking in every once in a while to witness the fire. Now deleting tweets one at a time after reading, saving some, buying books from old reminders. Saying the last goodbyes but loving all the fun it once was.

A little escapism, please. As I hide away on a Friday night.
January 9, 2026 at 10:29 PM
Well that was pretty spectacular. Find some people to read out loud to this year. I promise it will make things better for a moment.

Through the mail slot today. Okay, not really. A large box. Parked on my porch looking up lovingly at that mail slot. Maybe this is my Pilgrimage year. Get your own set at asterismbooks.com/product/pilg.... They are lovely. @neglectedbooks.com @asterismbooks.bsky.social

My daughter sent me this from an IG post she liked. I feel so seen!

I think prices are actually getting worse.

Maybe the spirit of Stella Gibbons will help me find a reasonably priced copy of The Untidy Gnome on this, the great writer’s birthday. Or maybe not.

Finished my Trollope, snuck in an Agatha Christie as an ode to my Nana, and am starting We Live Here Now by C.D. Rose. If only I didn’t have to go back to work tomorrow, I could just keep reading at this dizzying and wonderful pace.

My first blank journal of the year. With details from Concierto de aves by Frans Snyders.

“Throughout the world, the more wrong a man does, the more indignant is he at wrong done to him.” Anthony Trollope, The Way We Live Now
Truly a novel for our times.

Always sitting with a big book on January 1. A symbol of resolve I suppose.
January 1, 2026 at 3:19 PM
Thanks for all the great Trollope advice yesterday! I’m ready to go now for that @onebrightbook.bsky.social conversation with @ds228.bsky.social and @ofbooksandbikes.bsky.social at the end of January.

Found two more Nicholas Blake, aka Cecil Day-Lewis, mysteries today. Love the writing, the quirkiness, the humor, the psychological portraits in these Strangeways books. Another example of a very good writer taking to writing mysteries for the money. Under a pseudonym of course. ❤️
