When I went into Ron’s garden for the first time, I realized how much I had to learn, because Ron had a chard the size of a washing machine. “Holy shit,” I said. Ron handed me a zucchini that could only be carried with two hands and told me he would keep an eye on my garden

Was I surviving off of my backyard garden? Absolutely not. Was I getting some thing I couldn’t really get anywhere else during the time? Also, yes. As the garden kept growing, I kept growing. My back neighbor noticed that I was growing food and asked me to come check out his garden.

At the time, I couldn’t really afford much, so my breakfast often consisted of eggs and chard. The chard was the only vegetable that I was able to consistently eat during this time, which is why I cannot really eat chard currently. I totally burned myself out on it 😅

I didn’t really know what I was doing, but the plants kept growing. And as the plants were growing, I was growing. my chard plants got big enough that I could start taking leaves from it. First it was one or two leaves at a time. Then more.

My chard grew from a plant. That was about 4 inches tall to a plant that was 8 inches tall. the watermelon started trailing around in the bed and spitting out leaves and side vines.

Despite me, not knowing really what I was doing, and not watering the plants enough, not feeding the plants enough, not being able to buy more fancy stuff for them, the plants grew. I know I have pictures of this time somewhere and I want to dig them up

I worked so hard with no help to remove all the weeds that had grown on the beds and all over the yard. Once I got that all cleaned out, I planted my plants. I couldn’t even afford a hose, so I had to take a pot from the kitchen in order to get my plants water.

There were some neglected garden beds in the backyard that my roommates said I could use. I lived near the Hillcrest farmers market and ended up getting some plants one day. Chard and watermelon I believe.

I ended up in San Diego in 2010 after a terrible series of events made worse by the Great Recession. I had nothing but a futon on the floor in a room with no closet. I was extremely broke and worked in a coffee shop

I took a major step back from performing publicly after being assaulted at a gig in 2017, but I’m still making music. Maybe some of you will enjoy it, and I look forward to hearing your music too
