Former instructor (UCLA/UCB/CU), Ph.D., on youtube since 2016. Imperfectly trying to teach Old Norse things and linguistics. Second Edition of my translation of the Poetic Edda: Stories of the Norse Gods and Heroes now out.
Something different on Youtube today: I interviewed Rob Waller, lead vocals & writer for @iseehawksinla.bsky.social who made my channel’s distinctive theme music I’ve been using for years. A wide-ranging interview on the band itself, songwriting, California country, and more! youtu.be/3-IEhZEnMGE

As a national park neighbor and almost obligatory annual pass buyer this stupid change is unforgivable

I take a look at Old Norse words that have wound up in French (and often, from there, in English). Full video on youtube: youtu.be/GQF18F24jjU

Today on youtube I’m answering a viewer question about the categorization of color in Old Norse. Full, longer video with links in the comments to my published peer-reviewed work on this subject: youtu.be/XuAOdF91YEg

Because it’s come up now & then I put a video on Youtube (full-length: youtu.be/rMW97Wl-Uh8 ) about how there’s really no evidence of a “commandment” that historical Norse pagan men needed to grow a beard, & how little we know at all about that religion’s *practice* (as opposed to its *stories*)

With a lot of people seeing the aurora even pretty far south, it’s remarkable to recall that it is *never* mentioned in Norse mythology. (As discussed here, some modern people try to make Bifrǫst the aurora, but it’s explicitly labeled as the regnbogi—“rainbow.”) Full video: youtu.be/_QLkE3mnkQk

The article about me on Grokipedia is an *exact* copy of the one on Wikipedia, and even says so. How is this worth preserving in silver tablets in orbit or whatever?

On this “Fenrir” tattoo in the discourse today (and similar “Norse” tattoos). Cross-posting from Youtube because a lot of people are discussing it here; not sure if the dimensions look right here but it’s on Youtube at m.youtube.com/shorts/UvNfu...

Kaleb Horton, again: "It's sad how many RTs you get by saying the world is ending instead of admitting the scary truth that it's not and there's work to do in it."
September 30, 2025 at 1:15 AM
I keep thinking about him this week. Kaleb was so generous with his time and feedback to other writers too. “Here’s me being supportive: rejection has literally no bearing on quality.” It matters to hear that from someone whose work was nothing but quality (and who never got the career he deserved).

One of Kaleb Horton's best tweets that rings in my ears literally every day. "Ah, self-promotion. I live for it. I absolutely do not have any kind of increasingly elaborate fantasy about living in a cave by a river."
