Six rare right whales died in one month. The species has only about 400 right whales left. They often collide with fishing ships or become entangled in fishing nets. Right whales migrate following food sources.

A cold-adapted fungus is devastating North American bats. The fungus leaves a trademark smudge of white on the bat's muzzle. The fungus was discovered in New York bat caves in 2007 and has been steadily moving across the continent since. #animal #bats #earth #envrionment

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) declares giraffes endangered. There are nine subspecies of giraffes, five are declining in numbers. Giraffes are more endangered than gorillas. They have disappeared from five countries in the last 30 years.

An estimated 600,000 seahorses were poached in Senegal in 2019. Artisanal fishers are fishing without oversight or legally for seahorses. Seahorses are ground into a powder in China for use in rice wine, tea or soup. Seahorses make up an $18 billion in trade.

The last known  Achatinella apexfulva died January 1, 2019. He was nick-named 'George' and followed by school children worldwide. George was 14 years old. The Achatinella apexfulva was the first of over 750 land snails first described on the Hawaiian Islands.

White-backed vultures, white-headed vultures, and hooded vultures are all critically endangered. The deaths occurred during their mating season. None of the affected species can afford to lose any animals.
