Water meadows,

floated not flooded, artificial not natural. Irrigation, the purpose is not only water supply for grass, enables early spring grass growth as chalk spring water is warmer than air, if the river water carries nutrients, it also fertilises grass, made on most chalk streams in Wessex.

A series of parallel banks and channels, water from a chalk spring river is fed along leets, along the banks, flowing into lower channels then returning to river. Landscape aerial photograph.

Have you spotted this delicate flower, rising alongside a chalk stream before? It is water forget-me-not. Did you know that the genus for this plant is myosotis, meaning 'mouse ear,' believed to be a reference to the shape of its leaves?! 🐭

Last weekend, we hosted a day of stream-dipping as part of the Hughenden National Trust Summer of Play on the globally-rare Hughenden chalk stream. We dipped in the lush vegetation, uncovering hundreds of minibeasts!
