Even when someone in that age range really tries to be politically conscious, it still comes off as really divorced from practice IMO (Itano, Yaginuma, Tsuruamki come to mind)

I think it's partly generational. The 1960-1975-ish birth range seems to have produced a lot of people that treat political ideology like playing with toys. It's different than just generic old person = boomer. Nishizaki was a nutjob but he bizarrely demands a greater self-seriousness.

Moriyama anime feels kind of ideal in the opposite way, where the different levels of deformation are fluid and unrestricted, stemming from interpretation of the design.

The two most recent Hosoda films I've seen were Ookami kodomo and Ryuu to Sobakasu no hime so all I could assume was "well, something must've happened at SOME point between these two". I guess I should watch it.

It's only ever happened in 1983-ish (macross, votoms, dunbine) and 1994-ish (g gundam, macross 7, rayearth), and got really close but never quite made it between 06 and 09 (Geass r1 and r2, Gurren Lagann, 00 season 1 and 2, and Macross Frontier).

"big important show" is a boring criteria but "3 popular robot anime that aired at the same time" is kind of interesting to me. It's like the opposite of a robot anime recession indicator.

There are lots of videos about how you have a responsibility to watch Gundam as an anime fan and none for Yamato. I would be shocked if the reason why was anything other than the fact that Gundam moves more money, by virtue of it's aggressive merchandising value though gunpla.
