The closest I've ever come to a legit understanding was someone made the argument Trotsky and his permanent revolution are imperialism, and Trotskyists are bad because they're imperialists, but then when I asked how Stalin's Iron Curtain bloc wasn't imperialist they just got mad, so 🤷‍♀️
