Oh for fuck’s sakes. HRM staff in 2017 presented this option to council regarding how to ask the province to correct the harms of the property tax cap.

This frequently produces an increase in the taxes on that home and can discourage individuals from purchasing an already existing home. A change such as this might help avoid some of the distortions that have occurred due to the Assessment Cap but its economic impact should be studied carefully before being implemented. Another alternative might be extending the Cap to all residential properties (homes sold, renovated, apartments). This would reduce some of the negative impacts of the Cap. Neither of these changes would not have any impact on new home construction. Enhanced low-income assistance programs (ie, tax exemption and deferral) might also be used to offset the impact of any changes to the Cap. It is also worth noting that Halifax, unlike other municipalities in the Province, has the authority to set policies limiting the increase in taxes payable by different residential taxpayers. Section 97 of the HRM Charter allows Council to limit residential property tax increases to a set percentage. Tools such as this may play a part in a larger solution or a transition to a different system. For instance, on its own accord Council could limit the increase in the tax bill of all homes regardless of whether they are capped or not capped by limiting the increase in assessed values for the purposes of taxes by a set percentage. This would be administratively complex but would eliminate some of the existing distortions. Staff would have to consider if they might modify this approach so it could apply to newly constructed homes.”

He’s talking about (paywalled) reporting about efforts to make the federal gov’t less dependent on AWS but seems to think the aim is far more ambitious than the actual goals - which are, as far as I can tell, to reduce the single vendor risk and seed domestic infrastructure.
Posts from a guy; text reads: For critical digital infrastructure, does it make sense to rely on a private sector that's beholden to the US market and thus vulnerable to US government pressure? What about the privacy risks that come with outsourcing your data to any private sector entity? If building out digital capacity is so important, why rely on inducements and hope for the best (while paying a premium in the form of private firms' profit margins) instead of just building it yourself? If it will take three years to replace Amazon Web Services, why not use to budget to GET ON WITH IT? You think that young, patriotic techies wouldn't jump at the chance to secure Canada against the US? We needed moonshots. Instead, we got tax incentives.

A lot of modern phones are reasonably smart about managing their batteries. For example here’s my iPhone reporting on its charge last night.

Unfortunately safety depends on the device, the cable, AND the charger brick.
