#OTD 2nd Dec '44, the John Harvey, exploded in Bari harbour, full of mustard gas. My great uncle, John Appleby RAFVR, was with his unit, 267 Pegasus Squadron at their airfield base about 5km's away, the blast blew in the windows of the control tower & aerodrome.

The HMT Rohna Disaster. My grandfather was to witness it en route to Burma in KMF.26. It was sunk by a Hs293 radio controlled glide bomb from a He177A aircraft. It was to be the biggest single loss of US servicemen action to that date&was covered up during the war & many decades.

#OTD 1945, my great uncle, George Henry Hall, was liberated from his POW camp in Thailand. He spent over 3 & 1/2 yrs in cruel captivity & was forced to work on the Death Railway via a few camps,inc Changi, to start with. He was repatriated not long afterwards. Poor sod.

#OTD my great uncle, Wilfred James Hall, from Cwmbran, wrote his last letter to his brother, Thomas, my grandfather, who was with No.1 Cdo in Burma. Wilfred's unit, the 53rd Regt. Recce Corps, RAC were on a 'well needed day for maintenance & rest'. KIA on 20th Sept'44 during Market Garden.

Remembering family on #VJDay80, who were in the Far East, inc my Army Commando grandfather, a great uncle in the SWB's, one in the RAF, plus one as a #FEPOW at the fall of Singapore. With the dropping of the bombs, it cut short their suffering & most probs saved their lives.
