The migration of reindeer herds plays a significant role in maintaining thriving Arctic ecosystems. They also provide a majority of the subsistence food harvested by several Alaskan Indigenous communities in the region.

About 56,000 reindeer can make up an entire herd. These magnificent creatures, also known in the region as caribou, roam across the vast Arctic tundra and the marshlands surrounding Teshekpuk Lake. But their habitat could see seismic blasting and new oil and gas development this winter.
