Melbourne is a wonderful city - all of the museums and galleries are excellent - but the NGV is outstanding. Hire a car in Melbourne and head south east to the Mornington peninsula wine estates and hot springs, then continue to Wilson’s Prom in Gippsland - squeaky beach is quite something
