A 19-year-old, who said he spent five months with the AA after being forcibly recruited as a labourer, said Rohingya were often sent to the front line as “human shields”.

Htan Shauk Kan Massacre

On May 2, 2024, the Arakan Army (AA) massacred at least 600 Rohingya in Htan Shauk Kan (Hoinya Seeri) village, Buthidaung Township. Among the victims were babies, children, pregnant women, the elderly, and persons with disabilities.

One year ago today, the Arakan Army killed at least 200 Rohingya civilians in Maungdaw as they tried to flee to Bangladesh.

Women, children, and the elderly were among the dead.

Justice and accountability are urgent. End impunity.

UNICEF shut down many learning centres in the Rohingya refugee camps due to a lack of funds. As a result, many children are unable to attend school. Some children are working or engaging in other activities instead of learning. - 1/

Given the ongoing resistance, widespread repression, exclusion of opposition forces, and absence of independent oversight, this election will never qualify as free or fair.

The election is just a tool for the junta to consolidate power and seek international legitimacy.

Khit Thit Media reports that when the earthquake struck during Friday prayers, at least 50 mosques were destroyed, and 300 Muslims lost their lives. The actual death toll may be significantly higher.

It is disheartening to hear about deaths and injuries in the Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh while the UN Secretary-General and the Chief Adviser are visiting.

People are hopeful that they will receive positive news about their return to their homeland in Arakan. 1/2
