why would anyone who cares about safety object to a legal pathway for a ride hailing service 1/10 as dangerous as the status quo? Why would someone who cares about holding big tech to account fail to call for accountability for tesla for the illegal operation of their cars over the past decade?

Your original post says “tech companies are doing illegal things and daring us to stop them” and that we need to “make it illegal for robots to drive” Waymo hasn’t done anything illegal nor signaled an intent to break any laws.

Independent analyses of data from the millions of rides they’ve already performed finds waymos to be 1/5th as likely to be involved in a collision and less than 1/10th as likely to be involved in a collision injuring a pedestrian compared with human operated vehicles.

Waymo is planning to test their vehicles with drivers behind the wheel to improve their ability to operate safety before launching a fully autonomous service in minneapolis. they already operate such a service in several other cities.

People have been texting behind the wheel of teslas for years using a feature tesla calls “self driving” despite it not being licensed for such use. Waymo publishes indecent reports for every collision their vehicles are involved in (do uber/lyft do this? no.)

2.8 million people voted in 2024 in nyc. ~2.2 million voted this year. But only 1 million people voted in the primary. to make nyc elections more democratic I would:
- nix the primary
- allow same day registration

keeping the primary but moving it to a different year is a stupid idea

it’s curious that you take for granted that north and south are effortlessly intuitive

look, Elon sucks but spacex is good at making rockets. that is a pretty well established reality. refusing to believe that is your prerogative

It was a spacex rocket

I definitely think the threat to the UN was overstated - it sounds like the setup was still being built out too. But do scam centers typically use setups like that? I would’ve assumed there’s a way to do it virtually

I understand that the details provided about the location were vague but what does that mean? Do you think there is a threat to another specific place outside of nyc proper?

can you clarify your implication? the network wasn’t intended to be used in New York City?

iPad multitasking and shortcut integration into Spotlight seem cool

I don’t think police should harass/shoot/gas/detain nonviolent demonstrators but I do think police should arrest thieves.

You don’t have to read his blog but why would you continue to argue with him if you’re not interested in understanding his point? Set the phone down

There are intercity bus lines that use bus depots. Flixbus’ whole deal is that they’re cheaper because they don’t

A lot of the people Will was arguing with were mostly saying “class boundaries are fuzzy, teachers share many causes with the working class” but instead of acknowledging the ample shared ground, he chose to pick fights about semantics and insult the intelligence of those exploring the nuance
May 10, 2025 at 11:40 AM
Agreed - a lot of times the argument seems to be mostly about semantics. “Working class” is not a precisely defined term so it doesn’t make sense to fiercely argue about who it applies to without bothering to define it first.

Yeah the 25% applies to metals and vehicle parts which do make up a big share of imports from the U.S.
May 3, 2025 at 12:17 PM
The conversation was about import rates before this year. Canada’s was in the neighborhood of 2%, which would’ve been lower for the US thanks to USMCA. I can’t find an estimate of what it is currently. I would guess it hasn’t risen that much
