All in all though, FFX is a memorable experience and was cutting edge at the time. Its still a pleasure to come back and visit this old friend now and again - and after all this time, it still can look fresh, particularly the beautifully made video sequences that Square are known for.

Post game stuff ranges from mind numbingly dull (HP wall bosses), frustrating (Lightning strikes, butterfly hunts) to fun (Blitzball) - but it all outstays it's welcome long before end-game. Completionists may find it detrimental to their experience.

World design is great, with the series opting for east asian and oceanic styles for what I believe to be the first time. The music elevates each area - with the exception of tracks like Otherworld, Zanarkand, Suteki da ne or Fight with Seymour then it certainly isn't among the standout scores of FF.

This would also be one of the final FF games to use the ATB system, which can feel occasionally stale and repetetive due to the similarity to previous games. I wasnt especially keen on the lack of variety in enemies with countless reskins.

Gameplay is solid, and I know that some like to say "hallway simulator" - however I feel that this game would not work without some degree of way towards the destination of Zanarkand l, it really does play a huge part into it feeling like a true pilgrimmage.

FFX was groundbreaking at the time by being the first fully voiced JRPG (not the first to use voice acting, but an entire acted story). Regardless of whether it is badly acted, and utterly cringeworthy in parts - it is still a landmark that paved the way for the movielike games we see today.

It follows a diverse party of characters, as they guard Yuna (now a religious summoner/white mage) on a pilgrimmage to vanquish Sin and bring a ten year calm before it would reappear. Your staple FF job classes are all here, and every character has a motive and backstory that will pull you in.

Whilst this obviously didn't stick, the plot remained focused on breaking the cycle of inevitable death - brought by Sin, a gargantuan beast that would destroy civilisations without prejudice

The original concept for FFX was originally one where a life-limiting disease would kill everyone on the date they turned 17. Tidus (a plumber) would team up with Yuna (a pharmacist) as they would scour the world for a cure.

Almost a year on from finishing IX as part of a a series run, and 4.5 years since our last run of FFX, it was time again to visit the world of Spira. Squaresoft had big ambitions for the first title for the sixth generation of video game consoles.
