While technically true, English based mouthing means you can very much misgender people in ASL.

But to answer your question, much like other slurs, you can inform your consumer what was said without needing to cause additional harm. This also allows you to signal yourself as a potential ally.

I have wanted desperately to play this game, but it takes hours just to set up! The game is a beast!

This does open a larger conversation. All of these rules and norms around the role of an interpreter have been decided by mostly white members of the community. As our field becomes more diverse we need to reevaluate.

Vital for access to the conversation, but not to the conversation. Bringing us into the conversation opens a whole ethical can of worms.

The same applies. Without a consumer to ask, we default to the Deaf community's norm. Interpreters are not participants, asking them to introduce themselves pulls them out of the role of interpreter. This is not unique to ASL, spoken language interpreters also don't introduce themselves.

It comes down to Deaf consumer preference. Interpreters will defer to the Deaf client for whether or not to introduce ourselves and step out of role. Consumers opt for no introduction, or simply "interpreter" because the goal is for those present to connect with them, and not their accommodation.

The fear Deaf people are confronted with when providing feedback to us hearing interpreters shows just how upside down the whole industry is. Agencies and hearing interpreters have orchestrated a system whereby Deaf people are forced to be thankful for the access they have, or have no access at all.
