Data junkie interested in almost everything except soap opera plot twists (so many posts about them!). Proud and tired moderator of r/ApocolypseTracker, currently hosting the Apocalypse, Hope, Democratic Erosion, Climate Sabotage and Theocracy Trackers.
Priorities . . .
As if we needed further proof what this administration’s priorities *aren't*.

I don’t know what that is, but now I want to.

Two current obsessions - tracking the looming climate and empathy apocalypse and green concrete.

It would be great in the U.S., too!

And here I thought fact-free accusations that anyone who disagrees with you was “beyond hope” would be limited to that *other* platform. Sigh . . .

I do agree with your statement, which is why I’m objecting to you’re characterizing me as opposed to laws.

I get where you’re coming from. I was remotely writing code for a breeder reactor before the web existed, but I can’t imagine practical regulations that could have prevented it from becoming a font of disinformation, Nigerian Princes, and grammatically-challenged cats.

Nice attempted straw-man. I was simply pointing out that your thesis fire isn’t a good parallel to AI because laws protect us from fire was faulty. Folks break laws. Most don’t, which is why laws are a good thing, but some do, which is why laws don’t offer complete protection.

Thank you. The truth is AI is a game-changer, for good and evil. And *that* does require a more nuanced response that the knee-jerk “AI is evil” crap that seems to dominate the conversation.

Are you seriously trying to argue laws keep us safe from bad uses of firearms and guns? I live in the U.S, specifically California. Some of our worst wildfires were started by arson or gross negligence. And the efficacy of gun laws here speak for themselves. Next?

Maybe that’s what *you* would use it for. I use it to refine ideas to mitigate the climate and other crises we’re facing.

If you’re morally opposed to everything that *could* be used to generate spam, how do you conscience using bluesky? Or the internet? Stop over-generalizing!

And fire can cook beans or burn down a library. It’s a tool. Bad actors using tools to do bad things don’t mean the *tool* is evil. I’ve used ChatGPT to design solar stills for safe drinking water in flood-stricken regions, and to develop a high protein bread that tastes good. Hope that helps!

Actually, pornography alone tends to be the earliest adaptor of any new technology.

I could make the same argument about streaming videos . . .it uses about 1/15 the energy to ask a query as to watch a one-hour documentary on alternative energy.

Same here. I’ve used it to develop a low-glycemic flour that tastes good, design sustainable communities, purify water after devastating floods in regions with no outside access, and figure out how to feed folks in famine-stricken regions. It’s a good tool. What it’s used for is on the users.

Shared. It’s getting way too popular for able-bodied folk to write off the rest of us!
