We talk often about curriculum, objectives, outcomes, intent…
but there’s another one, hidden between the lines.

The invisible curriculum.
It’s written in trust.
Delivered through silence.
Assessed in confidence, not checklists.

I’ve come to realise that mentoring isn’t about perfect advice or polished forms.

It’s a slow conversation between two people who are both becoming something new.

A teacher learns to teach; a mentor learns to believe again.

The Invisible Curriculum of Mentoring

It’s rarely the formal feedback that stays with you.
It’s the look. The silence.
The half-smile that says you’ve got this even when you haven’t.

And if we get that right, we don’t just build teachers.

We build stories.

We build futures that remember our voices long after the paperwork fades.

Perhaps that’s what real mentoring is.

Not about how well we guide,
but about what parts of ourselves
we leave behind in the people we teach.

That’s the part nobody writes into policy.

The part that never fits on an observation form.

Because what we are really shaping in mentoring is the unseen.

The voice that says you belong here.

The courage to try again.

The shift from doing to being.

I’ve watched a trainee crumble under doubt, only to rebuild with more grace than I ever taught them.

I’ve watched mentors forget the power of their words until they saw the ripples years later. Identity is formed not through instruction, but through kindness disguised as critique.

Somewhere in those moments, the FRAME model took shape.

Foundation.
Reflection.
Action.
Modelling.
Evaluation.

Not a formula — a story.

A story of teachers finding themselves in the echo of someone else’s belief.

When I began my research, I thought I was studying mentoring.

In truth, I was studying becoming.

The quiet metamorphosis from supported to self-sufficient.
From copying to creating.
From their way to my way.

It’s always interesting to get an insight on PE from across the pond. Gary is doing some good stuff. Glad you enjoyed it.
