But does a team need a high-contact guy who gets on base a lot, or a slugger? Baserunning? Defense? WAR won’t let you break that down, but just gives a summary value. Which is why it is one stat of many. Not BAD, but not the whole picture

Yes teams use WAR - along with many other stats, both in isolation and combination - which is my point.
But saying it is “settled math” is absurd. You can look at the sometimes large gaps between fWAR and bWAR to see that. A big reason for that is because defense is hard to quantify. 1/2
