The reasonableness of tone is not, after all, the most chilling factor here - unequal as it is to veiling the petulance beneath it - nor is it the fatuity of the argument, because no real argument exists. What scares me to death is Mr. Linker's utter sincerity. He seems to truly believe - and proudly that by virtue of - What? Breeding? Biology? Unalienable right? - he can safely, responsibly operate a 4,000-pound vehicle under the influence of alcohol. And he is not alone. How many of us are a couple of drinks and a bloated ego away from the same deadly delusion? Last year, in Suffolk County alone, 43 percent of traffic fatalities were alcohol-related. We owe Mr. Linker a debt - he has reminded us that he and his friends are out there somewhere. Ninety-seven men, women and children, their rights to life and liberty now permanently encroached upon, were not reminded in time that those who drink and drive are deadly. I devoutly hope that Mr. Linker's list of "I Nevers" continues to grow: I hope he never maims anyone, I hope he never kills anyone and I hope, on all the Saturday nights to come, when he is driving home with his customary quota of alcohol temperately coarsing through his blood stream, that he recalls a small but very patient word that might have gotten lost in the shuffle of his high-flown disclaimers - that little word is "yet." Dozens of vulture carcasses—at least some and probably all infected with HPAI—were reportedly left strewn about the grounds of an elementary school for days while bureaucrats wrangled over who would clean up the site, illustrating what appears to be a huge crisis of state and local capacity in Ohio.
Pierce Township officials said the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) initially refused to clean up or test the dead birds and only agreed to help hours after being contacted by the WCPO 9 1- Team. "They were very adamant that they were not coming. There was a recommendation that you just take them, put them in a bag, double-bag them and throw them in the garbage," said Pierce Township Trustee Allen Freeman. "It was very clear that there was no help coming.... Thanks to Channel 9, you guys reached out to ONR, and amazingly, they started to change their tune." "(ODNR wasn't) overly concerned with the situation. They really had no intention to come out and do anything for the problem," Wright said. "It did upset me. I was a little surprised. It's a wildlife issue. There's no better agency than them to deal with a wildlife issue." Over the next few days, Wright said he contacted local public health and emergency management agencies for help to come up with a contingency plan, while the dead birds remained at the school.

Ultimately, Bradley told lawmakers, he ordered a second strike to destroy the remains of the vessel, killing the two survivors, on the grounds that it appeared that part of the vessel remained afloat because it still held cocaine, according to one of the sources. The survivors could hypothetically have floated to safety, been rescued, and carried on with trafficking the drugs, the logic went.
