A widespread data-sharing program with ICE supports local and state budgets nationwide—even in so-called sanctuary cities and states that forbid certain law enforcement cooperation and information sharing with ICE.
This Bay Area County Says It Cut Ties with ICE. This Program Says Otherwise.
A widespread data-sharing program highlights financial ties between local police and immigration enforcement—and how even sanctuary jurisdictions still feed “the deportation machine.”

When left w/o oversight, here is how police investigate themselves. Even if you don’t care about accountability, this costs cities millions $$ in lawsuits & jeopardizes criminal cases.
Also, this story shows what happens when you permit the police union to de facto run a dept.

OPD Chief Mitchell is proposing changes to the pursuit policy so there is less accountability when officers do not follow policy. There is no substantive change to when and under what conditions officers engage in high-speed chases - just less accountability.

High-speed police chases are incredibly dangerous for bystanders and police officers. They are very expensive for cities -lawsuits and property damage. Oakland’s police chief wants to remove accountability so officers don’t have to follow policy.

@ljfernandez.bsky.social @ktvufox2.bsky.social coverage is the most factual & comprehensive - other outlets simply repeated OPD's spin that it "loosened restrictions" on high-speed chases. Chief Mitchell wants to remove accountability so officers won't worry abt discipline for out-of-policy chases.

OPD overtime is the most important cause of Oakland's budget deficit. There's little accountability/oversight - we need a comprehensive strategy to use police overtime effectively & efficiently & find other solutions (ie-use of civilian employees where appropriate), whenever possible.

*Restore public access to serious misconduct records;

This is why San Diego & NYC got rid of expanded high-speed chase policies this year - more property damage, lawsuits, injury, and death.

Until 2 years ago, the Crisis Intervention Training for the Oakland Police Department included an hour on "excited delirium" - including that de-escalation wouldn't work & go straight to using a taser. In CA, the term cannot be used as a diagnosis, yet the idea remains embedded in police culture.
