One of the weird features of this moment is that before Trump started these attacks on boats 3 months ago, I doubt most Americans had given Venezuela more than a passing thought, but now they expect us to feel so afraid of Venezuela that we'll support their flagrant war crimes and invasion threats.

Though I suspect part of the reason for the delay was a budgetary game to reduce the CBO's projected 10 year cost of the legislation. If that was needed to get to 60 votes in the Senate and 218 in the House, fine, but it's a stupid way to run a country.

See also the Medicaid expansion in Obamacare (signed in March 2010) not going into effect until January 2014. I know many states have biennial budgets and they’d have to do some hiring, but it shouldn’t have taken nearly four years to implement.

Trying to be charitable, but this skeet seems misguided.

Just as actual depression isn't just being kinda sad, actual ADHD isn't just being kinda unfocused- especially w/o treatment, it can be debilitating in daily life, and make it difficult to complete tasks even when you're interested in them.

A friend of mine watched it with his wife and she was pissed at him afterwards.

As an adult, I watched it with "The Day After" and "Threads" felt far bleaker.

I was too young to have seen either film as a kid and feel lucky that by the time I learned about nuclear weapons, the Cold War was over.

It's bad that a large account on here was amplifying an antisemitic conspiracy theory.

Various group-philosophical pessimisms will have you believing that universalism is impossible, not worth striving for. That if you don't oppress, you will inevitably be a victim. I refuse. We are best protected by democracy, by the rule of law, by human and civil rights.

Monkey's paw: GOP justices' clerks now an annual gift from far-right billionaires, just like they give to all their closest friends.

You can say this is dumb, but it took biologists until 2012 to learn that pee is stored in the balls.

I wonder about getting Alaska's voting system (top-4 primary, ranked-choice general) on the ballot in mid/mountain west states with citizen-initiated ballot measures. In the short term we could get more Peltolas elected & in the longer term (maybe) a moderate GOP faction and viable 3rd parties.

Even 20 years ago in supposedly gay-friendly Seattle, there were Millennials still using "gay" as a pejorative. (e.g. saying "That's so gay" about something they disliked)

My Boomer mom can talk about this endlessly- much of the produce selection in a typical 21st Century supermarket wasn't available to most Americans in the 1950s and 60s- or even later- especially during the winter.

I'm not a trade expert, but since the annual US-JPN trade deficit ≈ $70B, I don't think it's mathematically possible for Japan to create $550B in US investments over 3.5 years unless the trade deficit increases or Japan sells some existing US investments and moves those dollars into the Trump funds.
