Lovely shot of some of the #OC4C team enjoying a meal after our Mid-Term Review @vliz.be.
We hope you all got home safely and well done again for a great first half! ;-)

Great work Amanda & Galen at al. See their new climatologies of mean ΔfCO and net sea–air CO flux for the global ocean below 👇

Amanda Fay et al.* present new climatologies of mean ΔfCO and net sea–air CO flux for the global ocean.

Figure 5: Annual mean CO₂ flux calculated from the SOCAT database. Flux is calculated using the SeaFlux method using the mean of three wind speed reanalysis products. Warm and cool colors indicate regions of carbon efflux and uptake, respectively. The near-global mean flux is −1.79 Pg C yr⁻¹.

🌊The ocean carbon sink is ailing. In 2023’s record marine heatwave, the ocean absorbed ~1 Gt less CO₂ – ≈ half the EU’s annual emissions.

How much carbon can ocean absorb as the planet warms? @lamont.columbia.edu microbial oceanographer Sonya Dyhrman studies marine microbes, which underpin the dynamics of the ocean’s highly complex ecosystem, and are pivotal in how much carbon the ocean can hold: lamont.columbia.edu/news/tiny-gi...
Fishing for microbes! Most microbes are much too small to be caught by a net, but some microbes form colonies that can get large enough to see them by eye—and collect them with a net. Here, Sonya Dyhrman is in the western North Atlantic, fishing for microbes with the assistance of group members and the crew of the R/V Atlantic Explorer. Credit: Dyhrman Lab

Somewhere in Atlantic - and sea is like glass for last few days. We are out here measuring carbon flux & how ocean removes all of that carbon. Microbes don’t work for us; so unless we understand the processes - we don’t know where tipping points are. Thankful to @NSF for supporting basic science.

Great to see some of the #OC4C team Dr. Gemma Kulk and Dr. Dan Ford presenting in the Marine and Coastal Carbon session #LPS25 chaired by our scientific lead Prof. Jamie Shutler.

Q. Are there carbon targets for the ocean like we have for the atmosphere?
A. We don't think so!
