On 15 September, WTO members celebrated the entry into force of the WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies, which commits members to curbing billions of dollars in annual spending on the most harmful subsidies that contribute to the depletion of marine fish stocks.

The BBNJ Agreement/ #HighSeasTreaty will enter into force once ratified by 60 countries. So far, the treaty has 52 ratifications with only 8 more to go.

To ensure implementation, The BBNJ Preparatory Commission (#BBNJPrepCom) was established by the UN General Assembly (UNGA) to lay the groundwork for the Treaty’s entry into force. At the moment, the 2nd Preparatory commission is going on in New York.

In June 2023, a landmark international legal agreement under United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) to safeguard marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction (high seas), was adopted by States. #BBNJ
