🚨 New paper alert! 🚨 A study @jgrbiogeo.bsky.social demonstrate the use of an underwater hyperspectral imager to map #seaice algal community at fine scales (cm), which is not possible with traditional destructive sampling methods. #Arctic #Svalbard

When one thinks of the summer in the #Arctic, one could often imagine endless peaceful icescapes shed by everlasting sunlight. But out on the ocean the reality is different: fog is what you would typically find here this time of year.

Mission completed! We finished out annual #FramStraitNPI cruise, bringing lots of data and samples with us! We collected around 1500 liters of seawater in 3350 different bottles, partly analysed on board and partly shipped to different labs. Read more: www.instagram.com/p/DNXxG_eoK8...

How do we measure sea ice draft in the Fram Strait? We combine measurements of upward looking sonars on the moorings and in-situ measurements from the sea ice. Read more: instagram.com/p/DNF-Ad8IeW0

New paper 🚨 in #ASLO_LO @aslo.org describes a new proxy to assess the degree of photodegradation☀️of organic matter in the #Arctic Ocean. This is posed to increase with reduced #Arctic sea ice cover and this new method could be a way to monitor this in lack of other ways.

We’re having quite a foggy start into the #FramStraitNPI cruise this year, but we had some successful CTD stations and recovered 3 moorings nonetheless! Read more about our cruise here: instagram.com/p/DM0GKQiI6Rq

We left yesterday from sunny Tromsø for the annual #FramStraitNPI cruise aboard #FFKronprinsHaakon! We'll spend the next 3 weeks at around 79°N in Fram Strait, collecting lots of oceanographic data and samples for the @epocproject.bsky.social and several other projects. Stay tuned for updates!

Three different regions, three different sea ice regimes, three different ice floes and three visits of each of the three ice floes. This is what the #CONTRASTS expedition led by @awi.de is about. You can also read more here: instagram.com/p/DMhxgXcIDyu

Our team member Dmitry is onboard @awi.de Polarstern on the #CONTRASTS expedition in the #Arctic Ocean. Part of the work is to deploy a number of autonomous systems to track the movement of the #seaice and how it is melting. Data will be made accessible on the @meereisportal.bsky.social data portal

#onthisday one hundred years ago two Dornier airplanes N24 and N25 with 6 men landed in sea ice at 87° 43’ N when attempting to reach the North Pole. They all had to return with one plane. A memorial in Ny-Ålesund #Svalbard reminds of this expedition. Read more: www.instagram.com/p/DJ6dKy5IfO...
