My father addressed the Illinois @aflcio.org Convention on this day in 1965, speaking to the importance of solidarity between the fight for labor rights and civil rights.

Our Black and Brown coalition with @mifamiliavota.bsky.social furthers this understanding that we are stronger together.

Their struggle laid bare the blatant violations of the 1957 Civil Rights Act and the Constitution itself. Yet even in the face of injustice, their courage helped spark a movement that changed America. We remember their bravery and the ongoing fight to protect the right to vote today.

On this day in 1963, hundreds of courageous Selma residents gathered for ‘Freedom Day,’ risking intimidation and arrest to register to vote. At the time, only 1% of the majority-Black population in Dallas County was registered.

You have to deliberately cultivate a mindset of love in the face of oppression. That requires intentionally choosing the higher path of love, righteousness, and justice.

The forces of oppression want us to stumble, surrender, and submit.

Now more than ever, we must be vocal, compassionate, strong, and steadfast — committed to democracy over autocracy, truth over falsehoods, light over shadows, and love over hatred.

Today would have been President Carter’s 101st birthday. In a world burdened by violence, poverty, and fear, @arndreaking.bsky.social and I often reflect on the power of legacy. President Carter left one defined by service, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to humanity.

Preaching at Ebenezer #OTD in 1962, my father called 11 a.m. Sunday “the most segregated hour in America.” He preached that faith without courage is empty and challenged the church for being too quiet and comfortable in the face of injustice.

As the late John Lewis reminded us, freedom is never finished work. Each generation must step up, act courageously, and keep building a more just and fair society.
