Step 6. Copy and paste the URL of the work you have Remixed into the form that appears when you tick 'This work is a remix, translation, inspired by another work' box. You only need the URL; AO3 will populate the rest.

Step 5. Complete the page for your work as normal. You will find the prompt has already been included in the 'Notes' section. It is up to you whether you leave this in or not.

How are we keeping this fair, safe, and fun? AKA, The Rules 1. Don't be a twat! You must be respectful of whoever you are remixing, and whoever remixes your work. This isn't about having massive aggression and making out like the original writer/artist did something wrong. You're reimagining their work, not ripping it apart. A Stede-positive fic shouldn't become a Stede-bashing bonanza. It's about enjoying a fic so much, you can't help but wonder: what if...? And if you don't like what your remixer does? That's valid, but don't be an ass about it! You are not obligated to link to the remixed work in the original. There is no expectation for you to leave kudos and comments. If you don't like the remixed work, follow the same general rule of all fics/art - read the tag and/or hit the back button if it's not your cup of tea! 2. 500 words minimum in the Classic Remix… ...but aim for 10% of the original fic length if possible. So, if you choose to remix a 100k fic, you should ideally be aiming for a 10k fic of your own. It's okay if it isn't! Just make sure it's at least 500 words. Fic-for-fic and art-for-art only, unless specific circumstances (ie last-minute pinch-hitter is needed) arise. FUCKERY REMIX ONLY - No minimum word count, and no restrictions on work medium (unless specified by prompter). 3. Retain the original plot and pairings. What is the original plot? Well, that's up to the remixer to decide. But an Ed/Stede fic shouldn't be remixed into, say, an Ed/Izzy fic. However, if Ed/Izzy was a background pairing in the original fic, the remixer could choose to bring that to the forefront of the remix. You could change the POV, you could make it a prequel or sequel, you could make it a 'Sliding Doors' situation where at some point in the fic, a different choice is made. This year, those who sign up can also opt-in to a relationship being made poly, e.g. an Ed/Stede work turning into an Ed/Stede/Izzy work. However, if your assignment does NOT want this, it must be respected. You can find more ideas of what a remix can look like on Fanlore (see the link in this post) and if you have any doubts or concerns, message me @friendlytikek on Discord! 4. Respect your assignment’s preferences and the choices your remixer makes. That means, if they've specified safe works (works they do not want to be remixed under any circumstances), you cannot remix them. No exceptions. The same goes with regard to their rating and warning preferences. Likewise, if you don't provide any safe works or preferences, respect the fact your work will be remixed in any way your remixer sees fit. 5. All works must be complete and uploaded by the end of Friday the 20th of June, 2025. No exceptions. If you won't be able to complete your work, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can find somebody to fill your space so everybody gets a complete work 💜 Also, please ensure your work remains anonymous until creators are revealed on June 30th. You can respond to comments (because AO3 will hide your name!) but don't sign your name, link to socials in notes, etc. until after creators have been revealed. After the reveals, you can edit your work to include more personalised notes. You're also welcome to change the post date of your work when they go live and again when revealed. FUCKERY REMIX ONLY - All works must be complete by the time creators are revealed (also June 30th). Completed works can also be submitted after this date.

FAQ! What is Our Flag Means Death Remix? Our Flag Means Death Remix is a remix challenge hosted on AO3. What does remix mean? Well, in short, it’s an opportunity to ‘remix’ fanfiction and art you love! You retell or redraw the story, in your own words or style. In the Classic Remix, you’re assigned a specific person’s fic/art to remix. You must also have enough fics/art posted for whoever is assigned to remix your work to choose from. There’s a minimum word count (for fics) and a due date. In most cases, it will be a fic-for-fic and art-for-art exchange. In the Fuckery Remix, it’s a free-for-all. Anyone can sign up, and fics and art can be posted for the duration of remix week (and beyond!), and there’s absolutely no minimum word count. Art-for-fics and fics-for-art are also allowed. Can I sign up for the Classic and Fuckery Remix? Absolutely! What is the Classic Remix Criteria? To sign up, the works you want to be remixed MUST be hosted on AO3. To be eligible, you must meet the following criteria: You MUST have at least 3 fics, each at least 500 words long, for 'Our Flag Means Death' - if you want to remix fic/have your fic remixed. The fics must not be collabs. At least 3 of your fics MUST be SFW - not rated higher than an M - but your E-rated fics are still eligible to be remixed (unless chosen as a safe work). OR You MUST have at least 3 pieces of SFW art for 'Our Flag Means Death' - if you want to remix art/have your art remixed. Please be aware, that if you sign up as BOTH a writer and an artist, you MUST meet both sets of the above criteria. Although we welcome remixes of E-rated fics, we don't want to put anybody in a position where they have no choice but to read Explicit fics when they may not want to. We want to be welcoming to everyone 💜 SFW, in this context, is any fic lower than E-rated. If you don't meet the above criteria, you are still eligible to take part in Our Flag Means Death Remix Fuckery. You can also absolutely sign up for both versions of the remix! What is the Remix Fuckery Criteria? Just sign up if you'd like the chance for your works to be remixed! Anyone can claim a prompt, there's no minimum criteria to reach, and (if you select the option) you can receive a remix in an alternative medium to what you originally posted! Multiple people can remix for the same person if they so wish. You can have as many safe works (works you wouldn't want to be remixed, under any circumstances) as you'd like. Unfortunately, unlike Our Flag Means Death Remix 2025, there is no guarantee any of your works will be remixed.

What is it? March Minimix Madness is a low-stakes, low-key event that will take place from March 3rd - March 9th, 2025. Yeah, but… what is it? The March Minimix Madness is a more ‘toned down’ version of the usual Our Flag Means Death Remix. Rather than remixing entire works, you’re encouraged to ‘mini’mix just one small element of another work to create something of your own. For example, you could minimix based on the title of a work. You could change just one element of the summary. You could switch it from a Modern AU to a Canon Compliant one. There’s also no obligation to offer up your works to be minimixed, or to minimix anyone else’s. If you’d prefer, you can create a minimix based on the title or summary of one of our beloved episodes of Our Flag Means Death. Take, for example, the fic above (included is a screenshot of the title, summary and tags of 'breathing the same air'). The title is ‘breathing the same air’. But what if you just changed that first word? What if the title was ‘poisoning the same air’? Suddenly, it’d be a very different story. Similarly, you could change just one element of the summary. You could turn it on its head completely and switch it around. ‘A raid-gone-wrong leads to a near-death experience for Ed’ would be a different story entirely. Or what if you minimixed an episode like the one above? The title could be changed to change the entire thing on its head – for example, ‘The Curse of the Seafaring Life’ could become ‘The Curse of the Innfaring Life’. Or maybe another character has the cursed jacket…? Eligibility Criteria Unlike the Our Flag Means Death Remix, there’s no criteria you have to meet to sign-up. You don’t even need to sign up to post a minimix! If you submit your works to be minimixed, please copy and paste the form and fill it in properly to ensure your work is used how you’d like it to be. Are there rules? There are still rules to ensure everyone has a safe, fun, and friendly time. Don't be a twat! You must be respectful of whoever you are minimixing, and whoever minimixes your work. This isn't about having massive aggression and making out like the original writer/artist did something wrong. You're reimagining their work, not ripping it apart. It might only be very slight, but that’s the whole point of minimixing! All works must be complete by the time creators are revealed. Exceptions may be made.
