Wandering through London last week, I came upon this sign, which I hadn't seen before (Portugal Street, WC2). #bookselling in dangerous times...
An old thick metal sign, pierced by shrapnel, reading 'Orders taken here for despatch of newspapers, books and magazines to all parts of the world' A commemorative plaque, with the words 'This building was the head office of WH Smith & Son from 1920 to 1976. The above sign was damaged by shrapnel from a German bomb during an air raid on the night of 10th October 1940.'
