Hello followers! Are you in the right place? I post about cemeteries, folklore, Newfoundland, crafting, D&D, and other assorted (spooky) foolishness. I’m pro science, pro 2SLGBTQ+, pro climate change is real and anti racism, transphobia, homophobia, and simping for billionaires.

Man I don't know that I've ever paid attention to the number amounts for votes in the municipal election before, but they seem really dismal? I'm glad most of the people I voted for got elected. But damn, is voter turn out always this small?

Day 8 - Glass

Glass protects this graveside altar in Panteón Xoco, CDMX. I particularly love the golden sun and moon motif!

Visiting during Dia de Muertos a few years ago was an extremely moving experience. I loved all the colour, life, and memories in the cemetery!
A graveside altar in Panteón Xoco, CDMX (Mexico City). Glass protects a photo of Jesus, a cross, and a small statue inside. The door to the altar has a golden border and a small sun and moon motif. Below the altar are the gravestones for Concepcion Rodriguez Pineda, Abraham Trejo Quintanar, Pilar Munoz Rodriguez, and Jesus Trejo Munoz.

Day 7 - Angel

Did this Angel inspire Joss Whedon to create the character in Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Maybe, maybe not. But he did go to Winchester College and this Angel watches over West Hill Cemetery, Winchester, only a 12 minute walk away.
An Angel statue, hollding a bunch of wilting roses, overlooks a grave in West Hill Cemetery, Winchester. There is a wrought iron fence behind the Angel.

Day 6 - Gender

Emmeline Pankhurst was a suffragette, founding the Women's Social and Political Union in 1903. Her pallbearers were fellow WSPU suffragettes.

Brompton Cemetery, London
A talll celtic cross style gravestone. The top features a hand and two angels carrying an urn and some draped fabric. Below that is the figure of a woman with a halo. There is an art deco or art nouveau feel about the imagery. The base of the gravestone has a Votes for Women banner tied around it, some flowers, and a Welsh flag. This gravestone is in Brompton Cemetery, London

The inscription reads:

In loving memory of
Emmeline Pankhurst
Wife of

Soupsgiving 2

1: roasted carrot soup with carrot top pesto
2: avgolemono with gluten free pasta instead of orzo (extra thick due to noodles absorbing sauce)
3: pozole rojo with the toppings sunk to the bottom
4: potato lentil stew
A bowl of roasted carrot soup with a dollop of carrot top pesto on top. A bowl of avgolemono soup that has been thickened a little much in the transportation of the soup A bowl of pozole with the toppings sunk to the bottom A bowl of potato lentil stew that has been thickened a little much but still kind of resembles a stew

Here's a similar bird from Highgate that was pointed out to us on the tour as a pelican. Yours might be a pelican too!
A gravestone half hidden amongst greenery. The image on the top of the gravestone is a pelican with its wings open and feeding a nest of baby pelicans

Today is my D&D group's second annual Soupsgiving. I'm bringing pozole rojo. The Mexican grocery store only have comically large cans of hominy so I see more pozole in my future.

Coconut milk can for scale
A comically large can of Mexican style hominy. The can contains 6 lbs and 12 oz of hominy. The comically large can of hominy next to a normal 400ml can of coconut milk

I had my first visit last year! If it weren't an ocean away I'd spend so much time there

If you ever do make it here, you must visit the Irish Loop (Southern Shore of the Avalon Peninsula). My aunt is from Trepassey and when she visits Ireland people think she's from Ireland based on her accent!
ohfolkthat.bsky.social
I was torn between this and a pelican I saw on a grave at Highgate but this is just so different!

Also the £10,000 to have it made was raised by a former Barnardo resident, Jean Clark, because she wanted those children to be recognized.
ohfolkthat.bsky.social
It is! It was installed in 2016, made by master carver Tom Nicholls. And researchers from FOTHCP worked on identifying the children commemorated!

Day 5 - Bird

I am the swift
Uplifting rush of
Quiet birds in
Circled flight

This commemorates the orphans of Dr Barnardo's orphanages who died in childhood and 3 of Dr Barnardo's own children. The bird is a cockney sparrow.

Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park, London
A large sculptural gravestone in Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park, London. The top of the gravestone is shaped like two hands releasing a cockney sparrow. The inscription on the grave reads:

I don't know anything about Bridget. Without a date I've found it hard to search for her. I'm thinking she might have worked at either the Hotel de Paris in St John's or Toussaint's bakery in Harbour Grace (which is closer to Port de Grave).

But Delaney is a family name for me so I'm drawn to her!

#31DaysOfGraves - Day 4: Languages

One of my favourite gravestones and definitely one I keep revisiting. Bridget Delaney's stone was donated by the French Consul of the time, J. C. Toussaint

Repose en paix, tu fut Cherie
de tes Souers, parents et amis

Port de Grave, NL
A headstone in Port de Grave, Newfoundland and Labrador. It is a large tablet stone with a draped urn motif at the top. Below that is a heart in a circle of leaves.

-
This stone was erected by
Monsr. J. C. Toussaint
(Of the Hotel de Paris) and several
Gentlemen in estimation of her
Many good qualities

Père Lachaise: Not Your Usual Burial Ground
It may not be everyone’s pick of a Paris park, but Père Lachaise cemetery, located on a 108-acre spread on the eastern edge of Paris, is a fascinating walk through history. A must-see cemetery?

It's in French but the translation says Jean-Louis Sacchet, 49 years old, pharmacist, is preparing for his mummification. He is building a pyramid at Pére-Lachaise. The Louf Pyramid.

#31DaysOfGraves - Day 3: Tomb

This tomb has a picture of a tomb on the side. Also a particularly detailed cherub.

Brigus, NL
A large standing tomb style grave in Brigus, Newfoundland and Labrador. On the longer side of the tomb is a carved image of a tomb. On the shorter side is a 3d cherub face with carved wings. Houses and trees can be seen in the background as well as more gravestones and another smaller tomb style grave. There is a light dusting of snow on the ground. The inscription on the top of the tomb style grave in Brigus, Newfoundland and Labrador. There is a simplistic cross in a circle at the top.

It reads:

Sacred

Aged 72 years
Requiescat in pace
Amen A better view of the details of the cherub face on the tomb style grave in Brigus, Newfoundland and Labrador. The face itself is 3d and sticks out from the side of the tomb. The wings are carved into the tomb and are less detailed.

Only 3 of the victims of this disaster received headstones in this cemetery - Elizabeth Ann and Malvania, and Moses Spracklin. 3 were interred elsewhere. The rest were buried in a mass grave. The Cupids Historical Society erected a monument on behalf of all the victims in 2013.

Day 2 - Nautical

Elizabeth Ann Spracklin (age 23) and Malvania Spracklin (age 22) were aboard the schooner Waterwitch when it wrecked in a gale in Horrid Gulch off Pouch Cove on its way back to Cupids from St. John's, NL. 12 lives were lost, including all 4 women aboard.

William E Spracklin
Who was drowned
In the schooner

There is an epitaph underneath both inscriptions but it is covered in orange lichen and hard to make out

An article from the newspaper The Compass out of Carbonear, Newfoundland and Labrador for the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Waterwitch.

Therenis a black and white picture of the town of Cupids followed by the headline:

Also the distance between Cupids, Newfoundland and Labrador and Toowong Cemetery in Australia is around 19,000km (12,000 miles)! Pretty cool! I wish I could see a carvers mark on the stone to know who carved the Cupids stone.
