I think this is what a lot of non-creative people don't get about art. That it's *not* a process that can be optimised for maximum efficiency - the milling around and trying things and scrapping them and building on the core of a good idea those less good ideas had *is* the process.
I've been reading Adrian Edmondson's excellent autobiography Berserker!, and this observation on the writing process is something I think a lot of creatives will find highly relatable (in my case particularly the Fantasy Football bit).

Creating any art with the aim of it being popular enough to make money, will give you consistent mediocrity. Arists need funding to play and fail because that's the process
