Fascists want a stage. They want an audience. They do not deal in the truth. They are never arguing in good faith. By being on the stage at all, they demonstrate their power & like flies to shit, reactionaries flock to the strongman boldly lying his ass off. You are not playing the same f’in game.
This is why refusing fascists the legitimization of a platform and violently countering their rallies has worked so well historically. The authoritarian base that fascists recruit from, don't share the instincts of proponents of liberty, they aren't attracted to underdogs with no hope, they aren't compelled to self-sacrifice in defense of the weak, they're attracted to supermen on the rise. When a nazi gets up on a stage to call for genocide his arguments don't matter, it's the potency of the act, the very fact that he was able to get on that stage and say such things in the first place, that recruits. Fascists make a mockery of debate intentionally, in the authoritarian mind it's inherently just positioning and only fools take ideas seriously. From such a perspective the fascist that discards the existing norms, that dances around in a flagrantly bad faith way, demonstrates a kind of strength in honesty. The only honesty, in their mind, being that truth and ideas don't matter. Power matters, power through deception and manipulation - the capacity to get someone to put you on a stage, in a position of respect, despite your flagrant dishonesty - and power through physical strength - the capacity to march in the open, in great numbers, with weapons, with muscles, trappings of masculinity, displays of wealth, etc. Widespread mockery can hurt fascists by demonstrating their unpopularity, but so long as they have other sorts of power to fall back on the fascist can simply tell himself "this is the real power, this is the only thing that actually matters, what those people have is fake and hollow, that they will be overthrown."

The second paragraph here I think is salient. How many people have history’s dictators actually killed? More often than not, none. It’s shameful, embarrassing, myopic if not malevolent, to pretend fascist rhetoric can be debated & defeated in the market place of ideas. Fucking baby brain bullshit.
I do not accept selective empathy. I do not accept that the right gets to revel in violence against immigrants, trans people, Nancy Pelosi's husband, whoever; but then gets to switch on the humanity all of a sudden if and only if someone they see as human has been killed. I have empathy for all living creatures and I am on the far low end of the spectrum in terms of wishing for or enjoying violence being carried out on anyone. It's horrific and genuinely disturbing. So, I'm not cheering and I'm not gleeful, at all. But I sure as shit am not sad or mournful. And I am immune from any lectures on why I should be. I truly don't care. The violence Charlie Kirk did to others far and away exceeded the violence done to him. There are people who think there is a bright line distinction between words and violence and I think those people are philosophically incorrect. I honestly don't know how many people history's worst dictators actually killed, personally, themselves. The answer for many of them could very well have been 0. But does that mean they were never violent and therefore violence against them wouldn't be justified? Obviously not. Words can be violence. Making millions stirring up nothing but hate against marginalized people is violence. And it is violence at a large scale. People die because of it. A lot. And it feels like no one cares, and it doesn't count because: words. I think that's wrong, morally. I think words do count, though it's obviously a complex calculation and not always clear cut. But sometimes, it is clear cut.

Nothing could be less the case with a nazi. An actual fascist is well aware that some proposed policy may not have much of a leg to stand on. They are prepared for objective reality to line up against them. They know at heart that their race statistics are often false, misrepresented, or actually evidence for the reverse of their claims and insinuations. Not only does this not matter to them, they strategize from the beginning with it in mind. A fascist cares only about the landscape of power and how they can shift it to make them “win”. I want to be clear here: the problem isn’t merely that they’re arguing in conscious bad faith, fascists have no monopoly on that — nor even do authoritarians — the problem is what this arises from: a hunger for social power, and how fundamental it is to their position. Fascist recruitment doesn’t function in terms of persuasion, it functions in terms of promises of power. Authoritarian personalities flock to movements that promise them comfortably easy solutions, but more self-aware authoritarians flock to movements that promise them power. The primary recruitment tool of the fascist is the appearance of power. This is why fascists — and those other self-aware authoritarians in their general orbit including Stalinists and Maoists — focus so strongly on aesthetics and rituals that reinforce perceptions of broad popularity, community, strength-by-association and general social standing. Those movements that only whine, offering victimization narratives and promises of power without any tangible content to them, rarely recruit any lasting base of self-aware authoritarians (although a few will surreptitiously set up shop to prey upon the few true believers and deadenders). Appearance of strength and legitimacy is everything, without it fascist movements dry up. No self-aware authoritarian wants to back a loser cause. In 2021, it was estimated that institutional investors owned over 340,000 single-family homes, which equated to 2.3 percent of the SFR market. Altho their market share is small from a national perspective, in some metropolitan areas, institutional investors have a much larger footprint. In some neighborhoods in the Atlanta metro area, for example, institutional investors own over a 3rd of all rental properties. The rent-setting, property-maintenance, & eviction dynamics of institutional investors can also spread to other property owners, impacting a market beyond the properties they own, & the political activities of institutional investors can also have market-wide impact. For example, in 2018, Blackstone Group spent nearly $7 million to defeat a California ballot proposition that would have allowed municipalities to re-establish rent control. Blackstone's contributions represented $1 out of every $7 spent against the ballot measure. Studies have found institutional investors to differ from smaller-scale property owners in at least 3 critical ways. 1st, institutional landlords raise rents more aggressively. Invitation Homes, the largest SFR institutional investor, raised its rent prices by almost 11% in a single quarter in 2021, increasing rents by 8% for lease renewals and 18% for new tenants. In Las Vegas & Phoenix, they raised rents for new leases by 30% and 29%, respectively. 2nd, studies have found that institutional landlords under-maintain their properties & attempt to transfer maintenance responsibilities onto tenants? 3rd, institutional landlords rely heavily on eviction. One study found that the eviction filing rate of large institutional landlords in Atlanta was roughly 20% higher than that of other landlords, after controlling for property & neighborhood characteristics. A House subcommittee recently found that 4 institutional landlords filed nearly 15,000 evictions between March 2020 & July 2021, at the height of the Coronavirus pandemic…

Two of our sanctuary dogs, Buddy and Mims. Both ended up at the shelter at the age of 10 with many ailments. Now, they’re receiving the best veterinary care and round the clock love and attention. Many, many better days ahead for these two!
