Before telling story of word I will tell numbers of Chinese to you. All of them are simple: one 一（yi1) 、two 二（er4) 、three 三（san1) 、4四（si4) 、5 五wu3 、6六（liu4)、7七（qi2) 、8 (ba2) 、9九（jiu3) 、10十（shi2). They are basic numbers in Chinese and it is easy to add them more than 10.

How many basic words in Chinese? 470 words. All of other Chinese words were made by basic words. You cannot read them out, but you can understand meanings of the new words. This is why the pronunciation of Cantonese is totally different from Mandarin, but each Cantonese understands Chinese well.

The basic Chinese words are also important for Japanese and Korean study. All Hanzi (漢字、汉字）of Japanese and Korean languages came from Chinese. The basic meaning of them was the same and similar in pronunciation.

But all of the human made river and small river were named as 河（he2) . All of the great river out of China were named as 河 as well. Only the great river in Korea was named as 江. This is also an exception with a long story.

On the name of 江 and 河，I have an other opinion. Nearly all great rivers in southern China were named as 江, All other great rivers in northern China were named as 河 but an exception in province Helongjiang which located in the most northern of China.The 江 and 河 together makes a new word 江河
