An old FOOL
@oldguy243.bsky.social
A sort of retired Oriental Rug merchant, then fluid power system engineer for a component distributor, last mowed properties for older people. Today, ice skating guard for the local ice rink. So fun to be around young people living afar from US.
Wow, this is what happens when you forgea@@ t the bread dough that was left in the oven to rise in a plastic container and you decided to preheat the oven to 400°F. The container was 12" tall with a lid. Oops!

On the way to bring in bird feeder, I took a picture of this animal feeding on Moon Flowers.

Oh yes it is when you keep two separate bank accounts. My allowance buys lots of tools. Now if only I had the skill required to make something. A birdhouse maybe?

A wild cat that occasionally deposits its hair on the cushions. Frankly, I wish I could befriend this cat. But not to be, the wife is allergic to the hair. I am sure it resides up the street, as it is in good health.

Josh, you mentioned dead Ash. I worked as a tree climber, took down a dead Ash 12 yrs ago. I still have boards and live edge to be used. The railing pictured is of the Ash, no stain applied. Polyurethane finish.

Crazy the things an old fool loves. I remember in about 1985 brushing past this Walnut tree when plowing for a vegetable garden. The stem was about 8" dia. back then.

The cast iron thing, I Googled it, turns out it is an oil lamp, about 1810 era. I have had it for 76 years.

Crazy, old things!

An evening Cumulus. It was the light on it, that prompted the taking of the picture. If I was a pilot, I would be flying a biplane in and around it for fun. But, not today!

I am not great at woodworking. First fitting of the plant stand. Best joinery I have ever done. The shelves made from waste cedar picked up at the sawmill. Band sawed into rough size, then hand planed to smooth and bring it to final dimension. 1/2

Just a note. It is so satisfying to learn to use tools of the past. Here I have used a Stanley No 5 manufactured in 1927 to make a board shelf from a rough cut Cedar slab.

My fungus of the day.
June 6, 2025 at 6:47 PM
A fungus, it appears every year in nearly the same location near a large Black Cherry tree.

Good morning all. Please view the pictures of an obviously ill bird. If any of you can tell me your thoughts on this, I would like to know. Thanks!

Birds and a white tailed gray squirrel. An everyday activity under the bird feeders!

Ok. I must admit you guys have opened the very old eyes to try to see fungus that I would not have noticed if it were not for your posts here in BlueSky.

Crazy Gray squirrel with a snow white tail. Sent to me by a friend in Indiana.

We see this in an area of the flower raised beds under pine trees. It gets morning sun only and is always black. I have no idea what it is.

Jeez, on the way, taking the trash to the curb. Obviously, I am not a photographer. Just thought this to be a bit crazy. It is light created by an engineers train lantern pointed at pine tree. Oh well, you never know what an old fool might find interesting!

Interesting isolated ice formation on a Dogwood tree branch. Nothing else like it on the tree. There was a wet snow fall the last 24 hrs.

good post, the birds are hungry in Kentucky also.

So many decent people died during WWII to defeat the Hitler's of the world. Today, those Hitler's have returned in the form of Trump. How can decent people of the US not physically end this scourge upon democracy. Read, Damn Lucky, by Kevin Maurer for understanding. Below, read the last pages.

Thanks, it is not amazing. The wood is Ash. I did arborist work years ago and took down a 75' tree for a customer. Cut it into 8' logs, brought it to Sawyer who made it into lumber. It has been stored in my barn for 10 + yrs. The railing pictured was the project. The box is from a scrap piece.

I find the real skill is learning to correct mistakes so they are hidden or appear to be part of the finished piece! I have so many great tools, just lack the skills required to make use of them. I make nothing that is perfect! No problem, enjoy the effort and outcome.

A cat story. About 3 years ago, this cat shows up at my rural property and then runs off. I put food out that evening. Next morning it is on the porch and as I approach, it rolls over and scratch his stomach. And feed him a little more. A friend asked, can I have the cat? But of course! Lounging!
