I know that large-scale publicity helps attract more players, and that’s an important aspect to consider when you’re passionate about a niche activity. But I think we can at least ask ourselves whether mass exposure is the only goal worth pursuing.

Maybe I’m subject to a bias. Maybe I’m more alone than I think in appreciating the intimate events that players of more low-key games still organize today.
What’s certain is that those players never needed a heavy entertainment industry to be incredible to watch.

Today, I hope I’m not the only one who thinks we don’t need that — at least not in those forms.
I don’t feel that the professionalization of a tiny handful of players, along with the ostentatious grandeur of esports events, has brought much to the ordinary fighting game enthusiasts.

Esports is an industry, and therefore it is based on the ideology of trickle-down. Many fighting game players once hoped to see their discipline recognized by the general public. But that inevitably required predatory capitalism in order to reach the higher spheres of visibility and legitimacy.
