How to know you're connected to your kid: in the '90s, I got a postcard of the little blue guy in Vienna's Kunsthistorisches Museum. Fast forward 25 years and my daughter shows up with a plush version from the Louvre 🥹
(Vienna has since expanded its gift shop so of course I had to get two!)

Today of all days (terrible photo quality, but my laptop has informed me of the holiday)

Saw the insanely good "Gothic Modern" exhibit in Vienna last month, and the works by Scandinavian artists at the turn of the century were my favorites. This is Hugo Simberg's "Fear in the Woods" (1896), although who exactly is afraid is a fun question to ponder.

Yes, but they also need to use chains to measure the yardage, and since this is a larger distance it is taking a while longer.

Spent last week in Vienna with dearest friend, and we were surprised at the limited tree colors during a day trip, elevation 840m. Maybe we remember our childhoods wrong but... it seemed very green/yellow.

We joke (?) that our 1970s suburban home has a "house ghost." Not a "spooky" place, small, tidy, full of books and guitars
. Spookiest is the large wooden mask the previous owners left behind 18 years ago. 👀

Yes! And I'm no body language expert, but Tan Suit Man over here looks like he's not having a great time

About to sign up and hoping there are no tempting book recommendations because I'm trying to exercise some self control in that department.

Just north of Seattle. This is a more upscale market, but $6/pepper is a new high (low)

As a cathedral-loving agnostic I'm actually not even too conflicted here.

Anthropomorphizing is irresistible 🥹 it looks like a proud parent waving goodbye to its college-bound offspring

I'd volunteer to help translate this into English; it's an enormously interesting and insightful framing. Guess Duda chose the "special victim + narcissism" lane of relating to Polish identity.

Husband and I went off trail in Seattle's Magnusson Park, discovered meadows!, and were talking about how most green spaces here are near water rather than near neighborhood centers.

I grew up a street over from these Socialist Realism sculptures in Warsaw, Poland. Saw them again recently -- every figure is nobly looking off into a glorious future, confident and proud of their assigned role. This crazy-a letter is the same vibe.

Your posts got me out of the house and into the woods that are a block away ,but which I forget about. Here's a local cedar doing its springtime thing. Thanks for the reminder to go and be and LOOK !

Back in the motherland for a few weeks. Neighbor brought over dill pickle soup with rabbit meat (!). Crusty bread from one of five bakeries within a two-block radius. It's going to be rough going.

My first insulin pump was in 1992. It was ... not great. Fast forward 33 years: This little thing has serious intelligence and minuscule size. I finally listened to the 16yo's advice, and we can now start competitive blood glucose control. 😏
