I moved to DC 15 years ago and since then, it has been my home. It is full of passion, idealism, love, knowledge, a melting pot of backgrounds, cultures, languages, beautiful parks, museums, flowers, sunsets, people I love, amazing restaurants and bars, and streets I have always felt safe on.

The team from @dfrlab.bsky.social: @etbrooking.bsky.social @dinamsadek.bsky.social and @maxrizzuto.bsky.social spoke about whether about we should attribute influence operations / disinformation less @cyberwarcon.bsky.social. One key observation is attribution quality has gone up along with volume

Zak Butler from Google TAG coming in @cyberwarcon.bsky.social with some top notch automation to demonstrate how RT has attempted to build audiences after getting banned in numerous countries - masking their brand, repackaging content, and bringing in local staff and influencers

We’re off to a great start this morning at @cyberwarcon.bsky.social! @morganadamski.bsky.social kicked us off w/ a keynote, and we’ve ping ponged btw the IRGC, Chinese data brokers, Doppelgänger tactics, PRC doctrine, and heading back to Russia for an engaging story about a Russian APT before lunch

This course has been a collaborative effort and I am so grateful for the time, energy, expertise these speakers shared with my students. It’s a privilege to be part of a community that is shaping the future of #trustandsafety and I look forward to continuing these conversations

Glen Wise for providing insights into building trust and safety teams and companies like Cinder, with a look into the technical side of building tooling for moderation work and reflecting on how the field has changed across the spectrum from marketplaces and gaming to dating and social platforms.

@katieharbath.bsky.social for leading a fantastic table-top exercise on election-related trust and safety scenarios, preparing students to think critically and to panic responsibly.

Here come the fake impersonator accounts. A trust and safety challenge will be dealing with making lists of politicians, figuring out what accounts are harmful impersonators versus satire, etc.

A smart player figures out how to play the hand they are given. As David Frum writes in the @theatlantic.bsky.social, the job of saving democracy should not be left to the men on the stage. It is our job. www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

The reason the intent-based distinction matters in this field in particular is because of how you grapple differently individuals who are merely misinformed and people who are deliberately trying to deceive.
April 8, 2024 at 5:10 PM
Can we please stop using the word “misinformation” incorrectly? It’s 2024.

Aside this sub-headline using the term “misinformation” incorrectly to describe a state-run influence op, I am starting to see this trend where media orgs are reporting breathlessly about well-known and tracked Russian and Chinese threat actors like Doppelganger and Spamouflage as if they are novel

It was a pleasure moderating a substantive & measured discussion on AI and disinfo w/ Clement Wolf & Bilva Chandra hosted by Third Way. We discussed the changing landscape of influence ops & misinfo w/ advent of AI, what has/hasn't changed, detection and resilience
