A parent might buy Xbox because something like the series S is cheaper and offers access to Minecraft in Fortnite, plus maybe they don't know what their kid likes, so game pass unlocks a ton of titles from the jump.
There is much more to the market, than what you and I would consider important.

Why does a person buy one type of phone, pc? Why go to one movie theater over another if they show the same films?
Yes, game pass itself is an exclusive, features like quick resume, the ability to carry your save over to another device, backwards compatibility. All of these are key differentiators

I can get all of the Google apps on an iPhone, so why would I buy an Android? There are many reasons, form factor, better Google services integration, assistants like Gemini.
Likewise, Apple Music exists on Android, but it's a better experience on their own hardware.

I don't think Microsoft cares about winning, they care about getting as many subscriptions, and as many sales of individual titles as possible.

It really is highly dependent on the individual consumer. A parent buying a console for their kids is not considering the same thing as a hard-core player like you or I might.
Xbox consoles will remain a plug-in and play solution, with a great value subscription.

Two reasons. One it's for people who want a Console, want that local experience, and don't wanna deal with the hassle of PC and things like that.
2. for people who want to get a Game Pass, it's a great deal to be able to get things like doom, halo, etc., without paying $70 a title.
