All of my posts that have the issue are replies in threads where the original post was deleted first via the Bluesky app. I suspect that may be necessary, if not sufficient, to trigger the bug.

I think the easiest way to do it that doesn’t involve writing your own code is to use @jazco.dev’s Profile Cleaner. That will delete posts from the atproto repo and I would try that first.

But imagine if you post something either by mistake, or that you later regret, and then you find out you can’t get rid of it. I think this bug is serious and poses a risk to users’ safety.

I have tried deleting and reinstalling the app multiple times and I have confirmed these posts are visible to other users. Fortunately in my case there is nothing in the posts that I actually need to remove. I just want to delete my history generally.

I contacted Bluesky support and they told me they are aware of the issue but do not have a timeline for a fix. That was on the 11th of November. I chased them one week later asking if they could at least delete the posts in question and they said they cannot.

I am not the only person who has experienced this issue. I know that @o.simardcasanova.net has reported it:

And you can find posts on Reddit where other people have run into it too:

Discovered a bug where some replies aren’t actually deleted, despite trying to delete them multiple times

It happened last week, and again today

I first thought it was a client issue, but deleting them in Skeets also fails

At first I thought the bug meant the app and website weren’t successfully deleting the posts in the underlying atproto repo for some reason, so I then used a script to delete the posts in the repo. The posts have been deleted from the repo but still appear on Bluesky’s front-end.

I discovered that certain posts consistently reappeared after I deleted them. It doesn’t matter if I delete them from the timeline view, or from the post view, or whether I use the website or the app, the behaviour is the same: the posts disappear and are reported deleted, but reappear on refresh.

I first became aware of this issue a few weeks ago, when I decided to reduce my social media footprint. I’ll save discussion of why I decided to do that for another time. The key detail is that I made the mistake of starting by deleting posts in the app rather than using a script.

The issue is this: some posts can end up in a state where they cannot be deleted from the Bluesky platform, even when they have been deleted from a user’s underlying atproto repo. If you delete them in the app or website, they simply reappear.

Thanks! That’s really helpful. Have also shared some examples with the via the support email so 🤞

Hi Olivier. I was wondering, did you find a way of getting around this problem? Did Bluesky fix it for you? Thanks.

Hi Alex, is there any news on a solution to this issue?

Can you let me know when a fix for this exists? I am seeing the same issue.

It’s got some rough edges that I’m sure they’ll smooth off over time, but I am already enjoying using it. RStudio is starting to feel old fashioned and this feels quite fresh.

Ahh thank you! I wondered if this was being discussed somewhere. Overall I like it a lot. RStudio was starting to feel old and crufty compared with editors like VSCode. Might see if I can disable linting while they work on it.

Yeah. I was paying attention this time, since it had done it once already, and the startup screen simply presents Apple Intelligence as a feature with a “Continue” button, which I guess re-enables it.

Thanks! I was at 58 minutes this time last year, so it feels like progress. 😊

Thanks! It’s a first.

That is interesting context. Thanks!
