Highly paternalist national conservatism does seem to have largely replaced the liberal conservativism that seemed so pervasive a decade ago.

Just thinking of some popular Conservatives early 2010s - Cameron, Merkel, Rutte, Reinfeldt, Romney. Feels like an entire different era on conservatism.

Urbanists often look to places like zoning-free Houston, the private places of St Louis, and privately-developed exurban communities like Irvine. There we see rules about land use emerge between residents and via developers.

I wrote about another example.

Whilst my initial reaction to #DOGE was one of ridicule, it would probably be wise for the US to get its budget under control.

Much like other developed countries, raising pension age is a tough but necessary choice to make. Just increasing it by a couple years makes for huge savings!

The US House of Cards is, at least initially, quite good.

But it cannot compare to the concise masterpiece that is the British single season show. A must see for all politico-types
I'm against protectionism, and I don't really believe in cultural appropriation, other than we should never have let them turn this perfect, 12 hour British drama into a sprawling, interminable American monstrosity.
The first episode of House of Cards was broadcast on this day in 1990.

I learned some stuff about Bluesky I did not know by reading this.

Maybe worth passing it on to others so we can all start getting the full benefit of the 🦋.
Here’s some cool stuff you can do with Bluesky

We should never forget how historically unique Trump and his campaign really are. I find of late people have made tried to normalise him in an attempt to understand why voters chose him. Yet, honestly, there's never been anything like it in US history.
Said before the election, one of the most repeatedly disturbing things about Trump is they way they revel in cruelty. Most politicians are either in denial about the adverse consequences of what they do, or regret it and try to justify it. It's like a pack of teen bullies.
something so grim about this

The art of politics is learning which battles to fight now, and which to leave for another day. Rarely will you find all of your personal political beliefs fall into the category of "popular".
"If only we took all my favorite positions, the party would be so popular!" is the dumbest form of commentary. Everyone who does it sounds like a moron.

The evidence that the public likes moderate candidates is *overwhelming*. And they did not think Dems/Kamala were moderate.
