An industry spill response team practices using a heli-torch (the red device hanging from the crane) during training. A heli-torch is an aerial ignition device mounted on a helicopter to disperse ignited gelled gasoline. While typically used for prescribed burns in land management, it is also used for in-situ burning (ISB) of oil spills on ice or ocean surfaces. ISB involves the controlled burning of spilled oil to reduce its environmental impact. When done correctly, it significantly decreases the oil on the water. BSEE Preparedness Analysts from the Oil Spill Preparedness Division (OSPD) inspect these tactics in industry training to ensure regulatory compliance and monitor response readiness.

Robin Fowler, Teaching Professor in Technical Communication at the College of Engineering, discusses effective communication practices during the NA 475 Capstone Design Course in the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. Taught by Professor Matt Collette, the course challenges small teams of four or more students to create, develop, and document original marine designs at the contract design level. Projects typically focus on ships, yachts, submersibles, or offshore systems, requiring extensive project planning, weekly progress reporting, and significant CAD design work. Students also engage in detailed written and oral presentations throughout the course.
