Helen Czerski | Blue Machine: How the Ocean Shapes Our World | Talks at Google
Physicist Helen Czerski discusses her book Blue Machine: How the Ocean Shapes our World, a deep dive into the murky depths of the ocean engine, examining the messengers, passengers and voyagers that live in it, travel over it, and survive because of it. Earth is home to a huge story that is rarely told—that of our ocean. Not the fish or the dolphins, but the massive ocean engine itself: what it does, why it works, and the many ways it has influenced animals, weather and human history & culture. This is the spectacular story of Earth's dynamic ocean. Get the book here: https://goo.gle/3LuCPLP. For more information on Helen, please visit https://www.helenczerski.net/. Helen Czerski is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at University College London. As a physicist, she studies the bubbles generated by breaking waves in the ocean to understand their influence on weather and climate. Helen has been a regular presenter of BBC TV science documentaries since 2011 and also hosts the Ocean Matters podcast. She is part of the Cosmic Shambles network and is one of the presenters for the Fully Charged Show. Helen has been a science columnist for the Wall Street Journal since 2017 and she is the author of the bestselling Storm in a Teacup: The Physics of Everyday Life, Bubbles: A Ladybird Expert Book and Blue Machine: How the Ocean Works. Moderated by Matt Bongiovi.

What have insects ever done for us? with Dr George McGavin
What have insects ever done for us? As the dominant, multicellular life-form on the planet, the ecological impact of insects is colossal. Without insects performing essential ecosystem services, the Earth would be a very different place, and most terrestrial vertebrates that depend on them directly as food would become extinct. The loss of bees alone might cause the extinction of a quarter of all life on Earth. A total loss of insects might see the human population plummet to perhaps a few hundred thousand individuals subsisting mainly on cereals and a few fish. George McGavin studied Zoology at Edinburgh University, followed by a PhD in entomology at Imperial College and the Natural History Museum in London. After 25 years as an academic at Oxford University, he became an award-winning television presenter. George is an Honorary Research Associate of the Oxford University Museum of Natural History and an Honorary Principal Research Fellow at Imperial College. George is also a Fellow of the Linnean Society and the Royal Geographical Society, an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology and an Honorary Life Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society. As well as his many TV documentaries, George has written numerous books on insects and other animals. In 2019 he became the President of the Dorset Wildlife Trust. Psychoanalysts know, that EVERYTHING can be used for either good or bad.

Since greed always wins, the outcome is always chaos.

That chaos is then exploited by those in power or those coveting power.

Power goes hand in hand with money.

The deep sea floor sounded in Helen's narration as a pretty vulnerable realm.

How has humanity treated all the other frontiers ??
- rain forests
- atmosphere
- flora
- fauna
- earth as a whole
