Shirow used to be the posterchild for anime art in the western anime scene of the early 90, when I got into it.

I knew about the D&D influences, but this is my first time seeing the original Beholder sprite. Damn.
I'm surprised that not only the Mind Flayers remained, but became a famous recurring monster in the series.
