Oh damn. I didn't see them. That fucking blows that people are being shitty like that.
onedeuxtriseigo.nullpo.dev
It's such a shame. I used to really like her when I saw her popping up during her first term (the whiteboard stuff and catching ceos on their BS).

All of these incidents just reiterate how hard it is to trust politicians aren't scum behind the scenes even if in public they put on a good show.

Yeah back in the early 2000s it was certainly much less mature but sometime around 2010 they got pretty intensive testing infra and became "battletested"

And it certainly gets used as the toydb often but it's got a lot of bang for its buck

Some details on their test infra:

Fun fact: this is actually built directly into Firefox (and was actually the reason all the AI infra was added to firefox long before the ai chat stuff was added).

They use it to locally autogenerate alt-text for images in PDFs as an accessibility feature.

Lol sorry the "crypto tech bro" comment wasn't pointed at you. I was pointing that back at atproto/bsky devs as a tongue in cheek jab.
onedeuxtriseigo.nullpo.dev
Oh yeah certainly. Everyone's got a little toxicity going on on this website and we are all certainly guilty of it from time to time.

Tbh it's why I just refuse to screengrab-post. I'll QRT, reply directly, or link because otherwise you risk devolving into dunks.

Sqlite is pretty reliable. Very few moving parts, journalling, WAL, etc w/ an extremely rigorous testing regimen.

From there it's just a matter of making regular backups, etc. I think once upon a time they were looking at using litestream for live replication but idk what they do now exactly.
onedeuxtriseigo.nullpo.dev
Yeah. I'm certainly partially guilty for joking in those comments. (Mainly because I saw the opportunity to make a webscale joke and not actually out of any malice)
onedeuxtriseigo.nullpo.dev
Yeah they have an entryway implementation for themselves (I don't know if it's opensource or not but most everything else is). The entryway handles balancing users between PDS as one or another gets too oversaturated.
onedeuxtriseigo.nullpo.dev
Yeah they use scylliadb for the appview now i think. or foundation? I can't remember.
onedeuxtriseigo.nullpo.dev
I don't think they had benchmarks in them but I remember learning about some of this from the pragmatic engineer interview series they did back then (mostly in part 1).

But really while part of it was the queries, so much of the PDS is just proxying requests so horizontal scaling was more important
onedeuxtriseigo.nullpo.dev
Them opting for SQLite is fairly unintuitive but IMHO it makes a bit more sense once I internalised that the PDS is only in small part a data store and the more important role is to function as a VPN/proxy for atproto.
onedeuxtriseigo.nullpo.dev
Tbh that's part of why I was asking for a link since I hadn't seen anyone link to your original post so I could get the full context.
onedeuxtriseigo.nullpo.dev
The bluesky PDS are SQLite + go. It was originally postgres + ts, then sqlite + ts, and finally sqlite + go + a sprinkle of ts in late 2023.

From there they just route out to a shit ton of PDS (current 81). Each one scales to like 500k users and then they just add another.
onedeuxtriseigo.nullpo.dev
do you have the link to the article? I've only seen screengrabs of it but I've not seen the actual thing.
onedeuxtriseigo.nullpo.dev
Which post? Not the "sqlite can never scale" post right?
onedeuxtriseigo.nullpo.dev
yep. q is the declarative array lang for kdb+. q and kdb+ are written in K4. All that delicious iversonian goodness.

This was where Omnicorp Headquarters was in Robocop. I cannot emphasize how much we need to protect Dallas City Hall, it is art, it was designed by I.M. Pei and it must be protected!

NEW: I wrote about Dallas City Hall. Designed by I.M. Pei, it's an incredible feat of architecture that was meant to embody progressivism and a new start after the JFK assassination. At the end of the month, city leaders could vote to tear it down: www.chron.com/culture/arti...
One of Texas' architectural masterpieces could soon face demolition
The building was designed by foundational architect I.M. Pei.

Okay real talk tho if I ever stop wasting all my time on starting/stopping random side projects I want to make a kdb+/kdb-x PDS for the lols.
onedeuxtriseigo.nullpo.dev
How do these crypto bro tech nerds thing they can even make a viable social media?!?

sqLite? really? Are we in college? They never wanted more than 2 people on their "decentralised" PeDoS

The FUCK are they thinking? sqLIte isn't even webscale. If they wanted to succeed they should have used mongoDB

Fr. These types of spaces don't really convey well on camera but they are just incredible. They make the space feel so much bigger than it is and in a certain kind of way that makes them really freeing feeling to be in and around.
onedeuxtriseigo.nullpo.dev
Yeah ngl I think that's the core of why they noped out. Way too many people being toxic and they were probably like "yeah I'm not dealing with this anymore"
