We call for #Budget2026 to address this with targeted measures:

1. Expand fuel allowance access to one-parent families to address energy poverty. This will increase positively impact household income available for food.

2. Increase the rates of targeted payments such as the Child Support Payment.

The cost impact is even worse for households with a teenager, where costs are then +20% higher.

It is critical that the issue of income inadequacy for one-parent families is addressed in #Budget2026. This isn't just about food; it's also about energy poverty & family well-being.

New important research highlights a severe affordability gap for one-parent families access to healthy food.
For a one-parent household on State benefits with two young children, a healthy food shop costs €122— that's 28% of take-home income. That's 12% higher than if the adult earned minimum wage.

Community education is a community good and a critical anti-poverty measure. It needs to receive adequate, multi-annual funding from government to function and grow.

❗ Important campaign highlighting critical action needed from government to fund community education.

Our New Futures Employability Programme has a 75% success rate, yet is reliant on private donations - which we are extremely grateful for - to survive. (1/3)

📊 Community education learners make up one fifth of all FET participants-but receive just 2% of the budget.

That’s not fair.

Yesterday we spoke at the Taoiseach’s Child Poverty Summit.

The Taoiseach, and Cabinet Ministers Dara Calleary, Jack Chambers, Norma Foley and Helen McEntee committed to addressing child poverty in Budget 2026.

We look forward to seeing targeted measures announced on Oct 7th.

The Child Poverty and Wellbeing Summit bring together leaders, policymakers, and change-makers from across sectors. One Family calls on policymakers and attendees to use their power to make positive systemic changes in Budget 2026 to address poverty and deprivation in one-parent families.

We are calling on the government to:

✅ Provide free childcare via the National Childcare Scheme to lone parents returning to education or employment
✅ Transition to a public system of early years childhood education and care, including pre- and post-school care
onefamilyireland.bsky.social
❌Government systems are creating disincentives to work

✅They need to be reformed to adequately address child poverty, and we have a number of housing actions we want in the Budget such as Increase Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) rent limits and discretionary rates in line with local market rents

Lone parents highlighted multiple, intersecting barriers that are negatively contributing to child poverty and well-being.

Housing, childcare and access to social welfare payments were all highlighted by parents as critical issues that need urgent action if child poverty levels are to be reduced.
