Why ridiculous? What amount would compensate for the loss? Where would you buy another? Besides, one insures for losses one can’t afford. France can afford this.

I don’t cohere with Katie. We’ll need to find a place for her

The foot soldiers, sure. But movements often have leading lights that know aspects of the culture quite well. And every movement everywhere has many that only know slogans. Culture is a broad church, encompassing both what I like and reality TV. Their culture irritates me and mine offends them.

But isn’t that sort of distinction at the root of almost everything? If Corbynites thought his policies would leave them poorer, or if Reform followers thought they would suffer, they would change. But they never attribute causality in a way that challenges their assumptions.

Oh. I won’t let them guard my white van then.

Does the definition of sociopathy still work if millions of people do it, or do we just need to revise our understanding of what humans are like?

And even when he says this he still has to criticise Ukraine and Zelensky too.

How about the wars? That is the question. Was the UK present for those?
May 21, 2025 at 10:21 AM
Aren't the UK deals with the EU and US likely to be mutually exclusive due to the agricultural standards? Clearly the EU one is far more important.

Been many times, but it never grew on me. Cold, clinical, somehow quite sterile.

It's the only way to have it. They are spies and we need to do business with them.
April 15, 2025 at 10:24 AM
Unsurprising. Given how many times vehicle components cross borders during assembly it must be quite difficult to work out what the applicable tariff will be, and therefore the price implication, and therefore the sales impact.

Quite possible to just buy their allegiance. How many are there - 50,000? Offer them $2m each - say a $100bn cost - and almost all would be biddable. Much cheaper than some alternatives.

You can have inequality as long as a result of the inequality is that the person at the bottom is better off than under a different arrangement? Sure, that's what they all say. Many parties in many democracies present themselves as the only providers of this outcome.

So in this scenario Ukraine would not fire at the missiles and drones that arrive every night, so that after a week their infrastructure is in ruins and thousands have been killed? Cunning plan.

I thought it was intended as an offer they can't refuse.

Don't they still have/breed them in Novosibirsk?

If we're language policing much will presumably depend on how the speaker came by the term and what it means to them. But if we want to salami slice humanity into ever finer categories that we feel superior to then no, of course not, what were we thinking?
February 18, 2025 at 10:45 AM
That is not who we are
February 3, 2025 at 6:26 PM
Are you going as a supplicant or an assertive potential partner? Makes all the difference. If you're a supplicant they will humiliate you.

I remember a similar one where the word 'Personnel' was replaced with 'Human Resources'. So we ended up with qualified medical human resources who would attend to the injured.

So now they've banked some plausible deniability (why successfully treat him if we wanted him dead) the games can commence

Agree it’s silly. Ignorant even. But it can’t be falsified!

Very visible in UK politics
