After a little digging the 2 guys appear to be 2 50somethings who were MCC YCs & Middlesex 2nds players around 1990. They also seem to be people who have genuine concerns and are raising important points.

I'd add that English cricket coaching remains unaffected by what we know about how people learn & also how adaptable skills are best acquired.

Is it Simon Schama?

In addition high selection bias by birth quarter too. 8 of the 11 were born between September & November (Q1). #RelativeAgeEffects

I'm guessing Wyverns would start at U13 when CAG starts. Part of the reasoning behind the national Early Engagement Programme, U10-U12, is to expand numbers (double?) anyway.

This article doesn't mention EEP. Not seen much on EEP at all tbh.

Thx Nick for clarification. So it will be for state school kids only? As an extension of the Springboard initiative for post U15s? Will it include a Girls programme?

I think the Wyverns are a shadow/development group than run alongside the CAG, which is good... 'As many as possible for as long as possible in the best environment possible' (Fallby).

Griff is a very impressive individual and I don't doubt that he and the team are doing their damnedest to improve the pathway.

This article is however a bit short on details... data/impact/deliverables etc

So the YCs are 1 of 5 areas of focus of the first Key Pillar... but not for this year. 🙃

What do these documents even mean?

Surely they can afford this & concentrate on opening it up to those who have genuinely missed out on development opportunities within 'the system'.
February 5, 2026 at 12:32 PM
Whaaaat? Not read this (paywall) but, seriously, what is the MCC up to here?????

They brought it back last year. Stuffed it full of ex Indy school/Academy players along with some SACA players too, gave it to Graeme Swann... and here we are?

Well played the Eng U19 players today on reaching the final. 👏

But from a systemic pov a quick reminder that an incredible 9 of the 11 (82%) were born Sep-Nov. That doesn't suggest the system is maximising its potential player pool.

This will be a good test of the effectiveness of the Cricket Regulator.

Looking forward to this...

😆

Main points though I guess are that a) a surprisingly low % of U19s go on to have impact at senior level & b) there is a significant Relative Age Effect at this level that fades at senior level. This means too many early born are given opps for int'l experience at this age.
