Huge nerd. I love books and people who love books, D&D, Horror, SciFi, Boardgames... Basically if the thing you're thinking of is nerdy, I probably love it. Dog and cat dad to Spike & Dandruff. https://linktr.ee/OneNerdyOpinion

It’s been 1 year since a little orange fluffball climbed my leg in the parking lot at work. Since then Dandy has grown to be a part of Spike’s and my family. She’s also gained a bunch of aunts and uncles here and I hope has brought some joy into the world. Happy Gotcha Day Dandy!

Dandy has perfected her Cinnamon Roll form.
An orange kitten lies in perfect cinnamon roll position on a bed. Her tail is curled around with the tip resting just between her ears.

Dandy is snuggling, but also ignoring me. I left to go watch my niece run Cross Country earlier and she was not happy I went to the outside during unapproved hours.
An orange kitten lies in the crook of a disheveled man’s arm surrounded by fluffy blankets.

Dandy has found an effective way of keeping me from moving. She’s laying in my hair.
Closeup of an extremely disheveled man lying down. An orange kitten is lying behind him.

6. Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Silvia writes in so many sub genres of horror that you could get a good grounding in horror by just reading her works.

Starting Point: Mexican Gothic, Velvet Was The Night, Certain Dark Things

… how’d you know about the local Tree Trimming Extravaganza?
onenerdsopinion.bsky.social
It’s usually engine trouble. And our local mechanic doesn’t keep parts for those fancy imports, so they end up stranded here while waiting for them to come in.

Also, while I dabble in other genres, horror is my home. I wouldn’t feel confident enough to make a list in another genre.
A partial list of books read by genre. Horror is more than double the second closest genre, fantasy.

The axis is cut off from the picture, but are increments of 100. This graph shows all books read while the readers has been tracking.

Unfortunately, as a small town innkeeper, once they start selling Candy Cane Lattes I’ll be required to teach some big city lady the true meaning of Christmas. Probably won’t have time for curating a reading list.

That’s okay. I know it’s not for everyone.

Gemma is a British author, illustrator and audiobook narrator. She has written some of the most poignant introspective horror I’ve ever read.

Ice machine is a bit too far from the office. By the beer cooler’s compressor is loud and turns on almost exclusively when the scares happen in books.

We’re too small for fire doors.

Sorry for the flood of book recs… I get excited when people ask for them…

I read non terrifying things too. It’s just that I also read the terrifying things.

I’d say that makes me a pretty good judge of where a book falls on the spectrum.

If you like Lovecraftian stories, Peter Clines Threshold series is pretty fantastic. Not overly terrifying.

Another found family fantasy/ litrpg book is How To Defeat A Demon King In Ten Easy Steps by Andrew Rowe. It’s about a girl who decides she doesn’t want to wait for the legendary hero to come along and save the world, she’s just going to do it herself. Very Legends of Zelda reference loaded.

I don’t know a lot in the genre. Second Hand Curses by Drew Hayes is a good found family fantasy story. It follows a group of mercenaries who try to help people from fairy tales. For example, they attempt to rescue the children of a village who were lead away by a Piper.

Or did you want very gentle horror. Because I have a list I’ve been using to try and slowly get my sister to read horror. She currently draws the line at thrillers, and occasionally makes me spoil the endings because she gets too anxious.

How about a cozy fantasy? The Legends and Lattes series is low stakes fantasy about a retired orc adventurer opening a coffee shop.

Found family, light romance, good humor.
