That's more true in the southern parts of the state (I grew up there). Southern Indiana and Southern Ohio sounded more Southern too or maybe it is just more Country.

The author left out tv and movies. People listen and pick up the accents from there too. As a damn Yankee I eventually spoke more slowly because that's what I heard all day. Many of us are unconscious mimics and we want to be understood. So we "code switch" unconsciously.

The engineers in my life are allergic to gray areas and suspicious of people who see them. They seek answers and believe there is only one answer in many, perhaps most, situations.

This society values quickness over thoroughness every time. I remember a kid in my high school that everyone thought was dumb, slow. He now has a PhD in some sort of esoteric physics. Good thing he was able to enter college and show what he could do.

Truman did not tear down the Executive Mansion. It was extensively renovated because it was structurally unsound to the point that the second floor was unsafe for anyone to use. The exterior walls were not demolished.
