Our study offers an #eDNA based snapshot — a layered moment frozen in time — revealing the hidden #zooplankton diversity in the Marmara and Aegean Seas during the #mucilage event.

Check out our original research article, now published in Marine Biodiversity by Springer Nature:
Using eDNA metabarcoding to capture a snapshot of plankton community composition in the western Marmara Sea and northeastern Aegean Sea - Marine Biodiversity

…and I recently had the opportunity to share our efforts to understand how #urban dynamics meet #biodiversity in Istanbul, where #nature #conservation finds a place in one of the city’s veins—the Golden Horn estuary.

Big news from the Golden Horn, İstanbul! Our eDNA citizen science project (Rufford) will be at MARUF25, Istanbul, 1–3 Oct. I’ll share how tiny traces of DNA reveal biodiversity, track ecosystem health, and bring the local community together—rowing included! 🚣‍♂️ #MARUF25 #eDNA

Recently we biked 🚴‍♂️ along Florya’s coast & forest 🌳 in Istanbul during our Urban Cycling & Nature Observation workshop! Using citizen science apps like #iNaturalist & #BiciZen @spotteron.net, we tried to understand the local flora & fauna, passed monumental trees, and experienced urban cycling.
I am one of Istanbul’s oldest gum of the pistachio trees, known here as Dedeağaç. For more than 380 years I’ve lived in this forest, offering shade to visitors and standing beside my first friend, the cypress. Come rest under my branches—you won’t regret it

Interested in archaeological theory, ancient DNA, and the Roman Mediterranean? 🏺🧬

@ezgimou.bsky.social and I are organizing a session at #TRAC-TiDA2025 to facilitate interdisciplinary discussion and we’d love to have you join us! Call for abstracts is open until August 31st!
A flyer with key details about the Call for Abstracts for the "Integrating Ancient DNA with Archaeological Theory and Practice" session at the Theoretical Archaeology Group Conference 2025. The full abstract can be found at https://www.trac.org.uk/trac-tida-2025/ and abstracts can be submitted by emailing Ezgi Altınıșk at ezgialtinisik@hacettepe.edu.tr or Hannah Moots at hannah.moots@su.se. The flyer features a picture of the Library of Celsus, built in 117 CE at Ephesus, Türkiye

The day has come 💫 I will soon open up a 4-year PhD position @biodiversosurjc.bsky.social .

We'll be studying how global change impacts high-mountain lake food webs ⛰️. Details to follow. DM me if you're interested, and please share!

I joined the 5th one in Barcelona when I was a master student - I’m still wearing my jellyfish t-shirt 😅 After a long break, maybe it’s time to be there again.

Our #eDNA - based lagoon zooplankton project has recently been awarded funding by TÜBİTAK.

It’s especially meaningful as my first PI-led project with national funding. I’ll be conducting it at the Institute of Environmental Sciences, Boğaziçi University, with colleagues from Boğaziçi and Hacettepe.
A stylized illustrated map of Küçükçekmece Lagoon in Istanbul, Turkey, created using the prettymapp Python package. The lagoon dominates the center of the image, stretching vertically with a blue cross-hatched pattern representing water. Surrounding the lagoon are densely built urban areas shown in dark tones, with clusters of red-roofed buildings. Green patches indicate parks and open spaces, while beige zones mark undeveloped land. Major roads and curved highways weave through the cityscape, especially visible at the southern and northern edges. The layout is enclosed in a pale border with a small text box in the upper-left corner crediting OpenStreetMap and prettymapp contributors. A detailed illustrated map of Küçükçekmece Lagoon in Istanbul, Turkey, generated using the prettymapp package in Python. The lagoon system spans the center, left, and right portions of the image and is labeled “Küçükçekmece Lagünü” in bold, hand-drawn text. Dense urban areas with red-roofed buildings appear both to the north and south, while green spaces line parts of the shoreline. Roads, highways, and railways are clearly visible, including a prominent bridge crossing the narrow channel that connects the lagoon to the Marmara Sea in the south. The top of the map represents the north (Küçükçekmece Lagoon), and the bottom opens into the Marmara Sea.

Recently, I had the opportunity to join the @marco-bolo.bsky.social Data Analysis Challenge!

This initiative brought together participants from the eDNA community to analyze phytoplankton and fish datasets using a variety of bioinformatic pipelines.

Thanks to the organizers and all participants.
