These are chosen from a random pool, and are tightly curated so you never receive one that would make the run too easy.
We likely won’t give this kind of “failure gift” in later difficulties since the risk/reward possibilities expand greatly in those new run types and we don’t want to undermine that

Dev update for Pelican Empyrean: We’ve done some in depth playtesting on the “easy” run and results were good, but players asked us to ease off the difficulty and make the game feel more rewarding.
So at the end of a failed run you can now choose one magic artefact to carry over into your next run

Been loving Burst Error's game series retrospectives, and this Castlevania one is particularly awesome #gamedev food for thought. Especially as someone who bought (and loved) SOTN back when it first came out, but didn't play the later metroidvanias in the series

This year approximately marks my 10th year of full time #gamedev. That includes releasing Joon Shining, After Light Fades, Dream of the Star Haven in early access, a lot of freelancing, and approx 2000 rejected pitches across around 10 pitched games

For all you completionists, After Light Fades has a progress menu that shows % of levels completed in each world, and % of secret collectibles found.

Why don’t all games do that? I know right!
