Last week, we discussed data trapped in "walled gardens."

Consider the following scenario:

A producer uses their sales velocity data to identify that "Strain A" sells out in 5 days, while "Strain B" sits for 30.

Your compliance data is a goldmine of business intelligence.

Are you using it? Or is it trapped in your vendor's "walled garden"?

This week, OpenTHC discusses practical ways to use your own sales, inventory, and compliance data to make smarter business decisions.

When evaluating business software, the word "free" can be misleading.

You have to know the difference between "gratis" and "libre" software.

Gratis software doesn't cost money, but may come with limitations

The tool is free, but might be monetized in a way that is invisible to the user.

Today, we want to share the story of now we created one of our newest features.

The story of our new B2B Shop Embed perfectly encapsulates the business "flywheel" we have created here at OpenTHC.

Let's talk about brand consistency in the B2B sales cycle.

Why do we spend so much effort building a brand, only to send our most valuable wholesale clients to a third-party domain to place an order?

A powerful reminder from our LinkedIn community that the most important work in technology isn't always the flashiest.

It's the quiet, consistent effort of maintainers who ensure the systems we depend on are stable and secure.

Hot take: If you can't export your entire operational history and move it to a competitor, you don't own your data.

You're just renting it.

D.C. when they feel like jerking around cannabis licensees

TIL a wild story from the history of cannabis policy.

In 1972, President Nixon appointed the Shafer Commission to get data to back his anti-drug agenda.

But the bipartisan commission went off-script. They unanimously recommended DECRIM.

Nixon was so mad he buried the report.

Does your state have consumer protection laws on stickers?

Have these laws/rules had an impact on your business marketing?

If you could change one marketing rule in your state, what would you change?

The move to continue to require inventory tracking, while taking away the ability to report inventory to the regulator is not a novel choice.

Oklahoma did something similar in Oklahoma when #OMMA did not have a vendor-managed solution in place.
August 11, 2025 at 6:06 PM
This is what regulatory capture looks like in practice.

NYS has already contracted with BT to deliver a product.

The ink is dry.

Deadlines have already been set up. People have made investments.

Our 2021 estimate suggests that Washington State would generate 30,000kg/yr of waste is created from RFID tags.

This is the waste from just one farm in CA

While the RFID tags have benefits for large-canopy farms, these gains really only benefit State enforcement.

Here's an early look at our design for a cannabis compliance MCP server.

In this scenario, a user can tell an AI agent which lots they want to ship.

The agent will follow through by working with a MCP server.

MCP servers enables AI to operate another platform. Think API and browser automation.

LOCKED OUT

That's how many operators feel about banking in cannabis.

Running a cannabis business is challenging enough without stable banking.

The constant risk from holding cash and the excessive fees for basic financial services is holding the industry back.
